Microsoft Issues Warnings on IE 8 Beta 2

Autor admin | 28.08.2008 | Category SEO

No sooner had Microsoft released the second beta of Internet Explorer 8, then it warned users of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) might not be able to uninstall either the service pack or IE8 in some circumstances.

This is not unusual. When Microsoft released SP3 last May it warned users that they wouldn’t be able to downgrade from IE7 to IE6 without uninstalling the service pack.

The issue arises only under a specific set of circumstances. It only affects XP users who installed beta 1 of IE 8 (issued in March) and then XP SP 3 (issued in May). That’s the scenario as described by Jane Maliouta, a Microsoft program manager, on the IE Blog.

Confirmed: Facebook Movie a Go

Autor admin | 28.08.2008 | Category SEO

When a page appeared on Facebook featuring acclaimed Hollywood writer Aaron Sorkin introducing himself to the community and explaining that he had been commissioned to write a movie about the creation of Facebook for Sony Pictures, one might be forgiven for thinking the whole thing smacked of a hoax.

But it’s not. Sony confirmed to InternetNews.com that the project is indeed a go, that Sorkin, of The West Wing fame, will be writing the picture for Sony producer Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men).

“We are developing the film that has been reported,” said Steve Elzer, senior vice president of media relations for Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, which is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Dell Disappoints

Stocks posted strong gains for a second day on Thursday, but Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) threatened to undo the rally after the close when the company posted disappointing quarterly results.

Dell’s 11 percent sales growth to $16.4 billion was nearly $500 million above estimates, but the company’s earnings of 33 cents a share were three cents below forecasts, as the company was hit by restructuring and investment costs and a move into lower-margin businesses like retail.

But the company’s comments that economic weakness may be spreading drew the most attention.

iPhone Security Hole Could Expose Data

NEW YORK — A security flaw in Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone allows unauthorized users to gain easy access to private contacts and e-mails even when the device is locked, but the company said a fix is on the way.

Popular technology blog Gizmodo and an online forum run by the Mac Rumors site showed that it took only three taps to gain access to locked iPhones, which run the latest 2.02 iPhone software.

A spokeswoman said in an e-mail that Apple was aware of the problem and was readying a software update to fix it. In the meantime, she recommended users set the iPhone’s “Home” button to open up the phone’s iPod music collection rather than the phone’s “Favorites” menu.

Enterprises Looking to the Clouds, Dell Says

Autor admin | 28.08.2008 | Category SEO

SAN FRANCISCO — As more enterprises incorporate cloud computing (define) into their IT infrastructure, the number of clouds will proliferate, and there will be “thousands of clouds deployed out in the world,” Dell executive Forrest Norrod said at a press briefing here this week.

Many will be owned by enterprises on their premises, and others will be offered by smaller cloud service providers, “in the thousands or tens of thousands of servers, not millions,” said Norrod, vice president of Dell’s data center solutions division. These will be deployed in specialty services or for customers that have regulatory, privacy or other concerns, he added..

Weak Economy Could Sap Handset Growth

HELSINKI — A weakening global economy will blunt cellphone market sales growth this year, research firm Gartner said on Wednesday.

Gartner said it expects market growth to slow to 11 percent from 16 percent last year, while in U.S. dollar terms growth would slow to 9 percent from 11 percent.

The world’s top cellphone maker Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has forecast the market will fall this year in euro terms.

The euro reached record highs above 1.60 against the U.S. dollar earlier this year, but was trading at 1.475 dollars on Wednesday, roughly the level where it started 2008.

“We are starting to see impact of the economy,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi, adding increased competition and the weaker economy would also hurt average selling prices.

Judge Throws Out Copyright Infringement Suit Against Online Video Site Veoh

A California federal court judge, Judge Howard Lloyd, has thrown out a copyright infringement suit against online video site Veoh. The suit was brought by adult entertainment company IO Group.

The judge’s reasoning was that Veoh is protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act’s (DMCA) safe harbor provisions. Since Veoh takes quick action in light of copyright issues, they are not acting illegally.

“Veoh has a strong DMCA policy, takes active steps to limit incidents of infringement on its website and works diligently to keep unauthorized works off its site,” wrote Judge Lloyd.

Guess who loves this ruling?

Psystar Mac Cloner Ready to Countersue Apple?

Autor admin | 28.08.2008 | Category SEO

It looks like Mac cloner Psystar is finally ready to respond to Apple’s lawsuit last month that charged the Doral, Florida-based startup with selling computers using unauthorized copies of Apple’s Leopard operating system.

Psystar has continued to operate since the suit, selling mail-order, Intel-based computers loaded with Apple’s OS. This week reports surfaced that the company is planning to file a countersuit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Apple on antitrust grounds.

A spokesperson for Pystar’s law firm, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Carr & Ferrell, told InternetNews.com she could not confirm or deny a countersuit has been or will be filed, but expected to have news on the matter this week.
