Made in China: The Godson Processor

Autor admin | 26.08.2008 | Category SEO

PALO ALTO, Calif. — The 20th annual HOT CHIPS conference at Stanford University is an academic show, not a vendor-driven one. That means the biggest guns share the stage with the littlest pistols; and it gives the little guys a chance to shine.

In this case, a Chinese processor project found itself sandwiched between presentations from AMD and Intel, with its own unique story to tell.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences is a nationally-funded institution with five main areas of focus, one of which is technology. Within that area is the Institute for Computing Technology, which designed the Godson processor, a project that began in 2001.

The Trouble With Virtual Disaster Recovery

Autor admin | 26.08.2008 | Category SEO

As enterprises virtualize their data centers to cut costs and consolidate their servers, they may be setting themselves for big trouble.

According to the latest disaster recovery research report from Symantec (NASDAQ: SYMC), based on surveys of 1000 IT managers in large organizations worldwide, 35 percent of an organization’s virtual servers are not included in its disaster recovery (DR) (define) plans.

Worse yet, not all virtual servers included in an organization’s DR plan will be backed up. Only 37 percent of respondents to the survey said they back up more than 90 percent of their virtual systems.

When companies virtualize, they need to overhaul their backup and DR plans; the survey found that 64 percent of organizations are doing so.

EMC Takes Unified Storage Down a Notch

Autor admin | 26.08.2008 | Category SEO

EMC (NYSE: EMC) has lowered the entry point for its wildly popular Celerra unified storage offerings.

The new Celerra NX4 starts at $20,300, about $12,000 less than the fast-growing NS20. Users sacrifice a little performance and scalability for that price, but it also broadens the market for one of EMC’s most popular products.

Brad Bunce, EMC’s director of Celerra product marketing, said the ability to manage multiple protocols — CIFS, NFS, iSCSI and Fibre Channel — from a single box is “very attractive, especially in the SMB space.

“It’s clearly going to resonate in the SMB space,” he added.

Google Suggest to Be Set as Default on Homepage

Google is adding a feature that brings up suggested searches as you type, Google Suggest, as default on Google.com in the coming weeks. Google Suggest has been working on this feature for years, and it has been available to users in Google Labs.

Google has already added Suggest to the toolbar and YouTube.

Like many updates and features, expect it to be rolled out to a few users first and then more and more as the days pass.

More retailers are turning to social media as part of their back-to-school marketing campaigns, according to Jupiter Research. From Facebook to widgets, from virtual worlds to online video, retailers are targeting youth, who may not share the same feelings as their parents about a tough economy.

iPhone Users Just Want to Have Fun

Autor admin | 26.08.2008 | Category SEO

Admit it, what would you really like to do: manage your calendar or race a monkey encased in a transparent ball through a dazzling 3-D landscape of obstacles?

iPhone users have voted for the latter; Super Monkey Ball ($9.99) is one of a raft of games and entertainment titles for the iPhone atop both the free and paid list of applications available for download at the company’s online App Store.

Of the free applications on a recent check, the top five were all games including “Brain Tuner”, one of the emerging “exercise your mind” class of games that aren’t just, well, pointless.
