Stumbling Start For Microsoft’s 3D Photo Service
Autor admin | 25.08.2008 | Category SEO
It wasn’t as stumbling a start as the recent launch of the new search engine Cuil, but Microsoft’s new photo-stitching service Photosynth did have a rough first day before things smoothed out. The site went dark for a few hours after being overwhelmed by visitors.
“The Photosynth site is a little overwhelmed,” Microsoft said in a post to the Live Labs blog a day after it launched late last week.
“Getting ready for the launch we did massive amounts of performance testing, built capacity model after capacity model, and yet with all of that, you threw so much traffic our way that we need to add more capacity.

EMC (NYSE: EMC) earlier this month held the first of four regional forums intended to give customers insight into where the storage giant is heading, and the picture that emerged is one of a company whose ambitions have moved beyond mere data storage to managing the enterprise-wide “information infrastructure.”
The first Forum 2008, held in Long Beach, Calif., on August 14, focused on integration of EMC products with VMware (NYSE: VMW) and RSA Security, greater virtualization functionality, the new Clariion CX4 series, consumer product plans and solid state flash drives.
Cell Roaming Rule Switch on Hold
Autor admin | 25.08.2008 | Category SEO
WASHINGTON — The head of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission has put on hold a plan to revise the rules governing the right of small wireless phone carriers to “roam” on the networks of larger rivals.
At issue is whether carriers should be allowed to roam in areas where they own airwaves, but have not built networks.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin had proposed guaranteeing that carriers who owned unused spectrum could continue roaming for four years before they lost roaming rights.
But he withdrew the proposal before a meeting of the FCC’s five commissioners on Friday because they had not reached an agreement on the issue.

Three iPhone Killers: Netbooks, MID, Android
Autor admin | 25.08.2008 | Category SEO
Part of what makes the iPhone special, other than its impressive number of problems this year, is the fact that it promises a near no compromise Web experience on a phone-sized device. (Granted, “phone size” seems to be drifting a bit larger these days.)
The 2.0 iPhone has had an impressive start but seems to have run into some hardware quality problems, some cloud quality problems, and Apple seems to be repeating the Atari mistake with their Application Store. (Atari nearly died when they failed to ensure the quality of their games in the early ‘90s when buyers abandoned their game console). Several of us actually argue the 1.0 iPhone is better.

The Return of Tax-Free Shopping in New York?
Autor admin | 25.08.2008 | Category SEO
For online retailers cranky about a controversial new law in New York requiring them to collect sales tax on purchases shipped to that state, Newegg has an solution: don’t do it.
Newegg, a Web-only merchant that sells computers, accessories and consumer electronics products, has reversed its policy of collecting sales tax on New York purchases, the company confirmed.
When the law took effect June 1, Newegg began collecting the tax like other retailers. It was not immediately clear what prompted the change, and company spokespeople did not respond to requests for comment.
The tax provision sits in a murky legal area that online retailers and some tax-policy analysts say places an unreasonable burden on interstate commerce.

Mobile device and TV chip maker Broadcom said on Monday it plans to buy Advanced Micro Devices’ (NYSE: AMD) digital television chip business for $192.8 million in cash, to expand into the low-end television screen market.

Is Ubuntu Really the Most User-Friendly Distribution?
Autor admin | 25.08.2008 | Category SEO
For several years, Ubuntu has been synonymous with user-friendliness. A Web search quickly unearths dozens of articles that suggest that Ubuntu is the distribution you should give non-technical people to introduce them to GNU/Linux. It even won a “Most User-Friendly Linux Distribution” award, which you might think confirms its status.
However, like all conventional wisdom, this association is worth exploring. For one thing, you have to wonder whether comparisons for user-friendliness have any relevance in free and open source software (FOSS). For another, what exactly are the characteristics of user-friendliness? Moreover, does stressing user-friendliness mean ignoring other values — perhaps equally important ones?

Hydrogen Car Backers Show Off En Masse
Autor admin | 25.08.2008 | Category SEO

Hydrogen fuel cell cars from nine automakers completed a 13-day cross-country trip this weekend, in the first such mass U.S. crossing for vehicles powered by a zero-emission technology still in its infancy. As firsts go, the event, which ran from Portland, Maine, to the Los Angeles Coliseum, probably would not qualify for the record books. There were stretches without hydrogen fueling stations when the vehicles were carried on flatbed trucks, the longest from Rolla, Missouri, to Albuquerque, New Mexico. But then one of the goals of the “Hydrogen Road Tour ‘08″ was to demonstrate the need to build more fueling stations if the nascent technology is to develop, said Paul Brubaker, administrator for research and innovative technology for the U.S. (Read the full post about ‘Hydrogen Car Backers Show Off En Masse’…)
AOL, Live.com, and Ask.com Best Search Engines for Democratic National Convention Info

AOL, Live.com, and Ask.com Best Search Engines for Democratic National Convention Info With the Democratic National Convention starting today in Denver, I thought it would be prudent to see which search engine is handling the highly anticipated event the best. Of course, Microsoft rocked the Olympics and outpaces everyone in mapping Georgia, but who’s got political game? Microsoft proved again that it’s on top of current events, but it’s AOL that takes the cake in my book. First, AOL makes use of its design as a portal to serve up content on the homepage, which eliminates searching for today’s biggest US story. Then, AOL makes use of its news and content networks to provide relevant links in its search results.
