U.S. Clamps Down on Suspected Botnet Operator
Autor admin | 22.08.2008 | Category SEO
A federal grand jury has charged Leni de Abreu Neto for his alleged involvement in a ring responsible for maintaining, leasing and selling a botnet (define), a network of hijacked computers often used to send spam.
According to the indictment, Neto, a citizen of Brazil, used a botnet consisting of more than 100,000 computers worldwide. The indictment, which was returned by a jury in New Orleans, said Nordin Nasiri, a resident of the Netherlands, created the botnet. It also alleges that between May and July, Neto agreed to help Nasiri sell the network and its source code to an unspecified third party for 25,000 Euros — about $40,000.

A Disaster Recovery Plan for Small Business
Autor admin | 22.08.2008 | Category SEO
It isn’t easy adopting a comprehensive disaster recovery (DR) strategy if you are a small business.
Memphis-based Lipscomb & Pitts Insurance LLC has a little more than 100 employees, so it can only afford to have one or two people in IT.
“Although we had had two IT staff, one was more of a lower-level desktop support person, so in reality we only had one technically skilled network-based person,” said Mike Yates, vice president of finance at Lipscomb and Pitts. “If he was out of the office, sick, had a sick child or was overwhelmed by service calls, everything else shut down.”
One guy backing up data for 100 staff and looking after a whole lot more besides was a recipe for failure.

Oops! I Fixed the Linux Kernel
Autor admin | 22.08.2008 | Category SEO

When Linux crashes, users don’t get a Blue Screen like they do on Windows. Instead, Linux generates an “oops” — a crash signature that can help developers to figure out what went wrong. The feature may have a silly name, but it’s increasingly serious business. Keeping track of the “oopses” is the duty of the Kerneloops.org project, and according to supporters, its efforts have improved kernel quality and fixed a large number of bugs — a thrust that’s critical for Linux as it angles for even greater adoption in the enterprise and elsewhere. Will Solid State Drives Go Beyond Enterprise?
Autor admin | 22.08.2008 | Category SEO
Solid state disk (SSD) drives currently cost as much as 30 times more than Fibre Channel drives, but the return is impressive. The high cost has kept SSDs primarily tied to high-end enterprises that can afford such pricey performance.
But given that prices for SSDs are dropping rapidly, the drives may become more ubiquitous than in enterprise. Research firm IDC reports that cost is decreasing by as much as 40 to 50 percent annually, and industry insiders and vendors predict SSDs will be saturating storage systems as early as next year.
“The popularity really hinges on cost,” Charles King, an analyst at research firm Pund-IT, told InternetNews.com.

A Quiet iPhone 3G Launch in India?
Autor admin | 22.08.2008 | Category SEO

A new iPhone 3G owner in New Delhi. Source: Reuters Apple’s hugely popular 3G iPhone made its debut in India on Friday, but with a price of $700, none of the mass hysteria occurred that marked its launch in the United States, Europe and parts of Asia last month. At about three times the U.S. retail price and twice the monthly salary of white-collar middle managers, the phone may still find buyers among affluent young professionals who are snapping up iconic brands and luxury items and helping fuel the Asian giant’s trillion dollar economy. A midnight launch in the Indian capital drew a small but enthusiastic crowd to Vodafone Essar, one of the two retail distributors in India, at the city’s Connaught Place commercial district. The Secondary Payoff to Intel’s Cool Chips
Autor admin | 22.08.2008 | Category SEO

Source: Reuters What started as a breakthrough of chemical engineering 17 months ago has resulted in Intel breaking into new territories where it had never been in the past, at least with any success. In January 2007, the company announced a design breakthrough called high-k metal gate, which would allow it to continue shrinking the manufacturing size of its processors while avoiding a heat build-up. Intel co-founder Gordon Moore’s infamous 1965 theorem that the number of transistors per square inch would double every 18 months, a.k.a. Moore’s Law, had enjoyed a decent, 30-plus year life span, but was in danger of coming to an end. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) was finding it impossible to shrink its transistors any further using silicon dioxide technology. (Read the full post about ‘The Secondary Payoff to Intel’s Cool Chips’…)

Another case in the news is InterActive Financial Marketing Group (IFMG), which may have exposed the personal information of more than 92,000 applicants for credit.

Google, Verizon Talk Deal Despite Spectrum Clash
Autor admin | 22.08.2008 | Category SEO

U.S. mobile service provider Verizon Communications is nearing an agreement with Google on a wide-ranging partnership, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the situation. The deal under discussion would make Google the default search provider on Verizon (NYSE: VZ) devices and give it a share of ad revenue, the paper said. Verizon operates Verizon Wireless, the nation’s No. 2 mobile carrier, in a joint venture with Vodafone (NYSE: VOD). The deal is not yet final and the two sides are still negotiating on key issues, such as Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) desire to save information from user mobile phone searches, it added.
