NBC’s Olympics TV Strategy Pays Off Online
For NBC Universal, balancing TV and online coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games has been as tricky as any maneuver on the balance beam, parallel bars or vault. After paying $900 million for broadcast rights to this year’s Summer Games, NBC Universal executives are determined to protect the television business by drawing viewers to NBC and cable networks like USA. At the same time, they are also resolved to build an online audience through the NBCOlympics.com Web site, with the aim of drawing in more Internet advertising revenue for future events based on the success of this one. It’s a delicate balancing act: Concentrate too much on TV broadcasting, and risk missing the boat on the next generation of Olympic fans online. The Great Industry Standard Conspiracy

Autor admin | 15.08.2008 | Category SEO

A couple of innocuous words that have insidious consequences. A simple marketing tagline, yet it appears to be seriously undermining a vast segment of the computer sector. What is it? The phrase, “industry standard.”

It comes from the same warped (but ingenious) minds that coined the term “legacy” back in the 1990s. That harmless word served to forward the Windows NT - Intel processor gravy train at the expense of so-called inferior technologies like mainframe, OpenVMS and even Unix. Yet many would argue that despite all the genuine improvement to Windows in recent years to make it much more enterprise friendly, it still can’t hold a candle to many of these legacy systems.

Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA will be the first carrier to offer a mobile phone based on Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android software, the New York Times reported, citing people briefed on the company’s plans.

The high-end phone, which will be made by the world’s top smartphone maker High Tech Computer Corp., is expected to challenge Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone as well as other smartphones that run software from Palm (NASDAQ: PALM), Research in Motion, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Nokia.

The phone is expected to go on sale in the U.S. before Christmas and perhaps as early as October, the paper said.

Neither Google nor T-Mobile immediately returned calls seeking comment.

The Evolution of SEO

Autor admin | 15.08.2008 | Category SEO

With all of the conference events, podcasts, and social media buzz focused on SEO, it’s easy to lose sight of how young a profession SEO truly is. You don’t have to think back too far to remember the days of keyword stuffing, Web rings, irrelevant meta data ploys (back when Britney Spears was a keyword for every site), and old-fashioned black-text-on-a-black-background cloaking.

How far we’ve come.

We’ve seen a natural progression from back rooms to boardrooms — from the basement to the mainstream. SEO has not simply shed its dubious roots; it has become a legitimate, reputable component of a proper client marketing mix.

It’s rare to witness evolution as it happens.

Google SERP Bias? Google Knols Best

Autor admin | 15.08.2008 | Category SEO

I noticed a few weeks ago that sites using Google Knol or Google pages were getting great positions in the Google SERPs. This didn’t seem like a big deal to me at the time, as it was in less-trafficked areas and nothing that was competing with me.

But now the trick is out, and people are inundating Knol to grab greater positions in the SERPs than they could attain with normal means.

Come on Google — and in this case I mean Matt Cutts — how do you really expect people to believe your edicts when things like this can occur? You had to see it out of the gate. You keep track of the SERPs — the patron saint as it were — and as much as I have gamed the system, I’ve always trusted your moral compass and moved as close to it as my clients’ needs would allow.

USB 3.0 One Step Closer to Reality

Autor admin | 15.08.2008 | Category SEO

Intel has announced the Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) draft specification, revision 0.9, is now available for review, making USB 3.0 one step closer to reality. The news comes just ahead of the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco next week.

The USB 3.0 (define) architecture was first demonstrated at last year’s IDF show and is on track for finalization this year, with products hitting the market in 2009. The chief improvement in USB 3.0 will be a ten-fold increase in throughput to 4.8 gigabits per second, or 600 megabytes per second.

At that speed, USB 3.0, also known as “SuperSpeed USB,” would be faster than the Serial ATA (SATA) (define) controllers used on today’s hard drives.
