VMware may be Hit Hard by Hypervisor Error
Autor admin | 14.08.2008 | Category SEO
Sometimes it pays to wait a few weeks. VMware introduced Update 2 for both its ESX 3.5 hypervisor and ESXi 3.5 free hypervisor at the end of July with much fanfare.
Then, at midnight on August 12, both went awry. A piece of code in the hypervisor expired the products, which meant that users could not start new virtual machines (VMs), power on VMs after they had been shut down, and could not move a VM from one host to another.
New CEO Paul Maritz wrote an open letter of apology within 12 hours, promising this would not happen again. VMware has also notified customers, pulled the affected software off its Websites, and issued new versions without the flaw.

eBay Eyes Stake in Online Seller Gmarket
Autor admin | 14.08.2008 | Category SEO
eBay is seeking to buy a minority stake in Gmarket, the U.S. online auctioneer said on Wednesday, lifting shares of the South Korean online retailer by as much as 16 percent.
Some on Wall Street saw the move as the first step toward eBay taking over Gmarket and removing it as a competitor in South Korea, where the two companies battle for market share.
eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) is in discussions with Interpark, a South Korean Web-based mall operator, and its chairman, Ki Hyung Lee, to buy out their interests, an eBay spokesman said.
The companies are seeking approval from the Korea Fair Trade Commission, eBay spokesman Jose Mallabo said.

Net Privacy Could See Action in Next Congress
Autor admin | 14.08.2008 | Category SEO

The debate over online privacy may be headed for a lull in the coming weeks, but you can expect it to resume in earnest next year, when legislation is likely to appear before a new Congress calling for baseline safeguards for Internet users. Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), who chairs the Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet, is planning to introduce legislation in the next session to create something like an online bill of rights. “The general idea here is to strengthen consumer privacy protections [and] ensure that consumers are aware of who is collecting their information and when they are collecting it,” Markey’s communications director, Jessica Schafer, told InternetNews.com. Storage Sells —Brocade Defies Downturn
Autor admin | 14.08.2008 | Category SEO
Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD) posted strong quarterly results on Tuesday, evidence that storage spending continues to hold strong in the face of an economic downturn.
Just about every aspect of the storage switch market leader’s product lineup held up well in its July quarter, including 4 Gbps and 8 Gbps Fibre Channel switches, director-class switches, embedded switches for blade servers and services, with embedded switches and services both posting 40 percent year-over-year revenue growth in the quarter.
“We really hit on all cylinders,” said Ian Whiting, vice president and general manager of Brocade’s Data Center Infrastructure Division.
Whiting said he believes the company took share from storage switch rival Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) “across the board.”
Indeed, Cisco reported last week that its storage revenues declined 14 percent from the year-ago quarter, which Pacific Growth Equities analyst Kaushik Roy attributed to Cisco’s lack of 8-gig Fibre Channel offerings and Brocade’s stronger current relationship with EMC (NYSE: EMC).

That Sucking Sound You Hear Is a Software Project
Autor admin | 14.08.2008 | Category SEO
Fortune 500 companies abandon more than one-third of software-development projects after implementation because they don’t meet user needs, according to a study conducted from April through July by analyst firm Voke Media.
That sees a lot of money poured down the drain — the average project costs $3.2 million and requires almost 1,300 person months to complete, Voke said.
The solution lies in automating the requirements and test-case creation processes and involving business analysts from the beginning, Voke founder Theresa Lanowitz told InternetNews.com. Business analysts are “a valuable conduit between the business and application developers,” she said.

SAP Aims to Cash In on Corporate Risk Evaluations
Autor admin | 14.08.2008 | Category SEO
SAP is betting that enterprises will be struggling to cope with Standard & Poor’s (S&P) new ratings criteria and is introducing a new offering designed to help them address S&P’s enterprise risk management (ERM) evaluations.
The evaluations, which will begin in the third quarter, will target non-financial companies, S&P said. They will focus on risk management culture and strategic management, which it describes as “two universally applicable aspects of ERM.”
The Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) defines ERM as “the application of basic risk management principles to all risks facing an organization” and says that ERM is becoming important “partly as a result of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.”
S&P, the financial research and ratings giant, announced in May that it would begin evaluating non-financial companies on their enterprise risk management.
