Amazon Kindles Tech Rally

Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) sent tech stocks higher on Monday after a Citigroup analyst issued an upbeat report on the stock.

Amazon shares gained more than 9% after analyst Mark Mahaney said Amazon’s Kindle could become “the iPod of the book world.”

Mahaney said Amazon could sell as many as 380,000 of the devices this year, double his initial estimate.

Broadcom (NASDAQ: BRCM) led a strong chip sector, rising 3.7% after winning a patent ruling against SiRF (NASDAQ: SIRF), which saw its shares fall 24% on the news.

But stocks finished well off their highs after oil prices stabilized following another steep drop.

Rackspace Hosting (NYSE: RAX) fared better in its second day of trading, rising 7%.

Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) rose and Applied Materials (NASDAQ: AMAT) declined ahead of their results, due out after the close on Tuesday.

VeriSign (NASDAQ: VRSN) and Qwest (NYSE: Q) rose on upgrades.

Amazon Kindle: The iPod of Book Readers?
Amazon Kindle Citigroup said on Monday that Amazon.com’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) Kindle electronic book reader appears to be selling much better than expected and could double a previous estimate for units sold this year, sending shares in the online retailer up 9 percent. With few cool new gadgets expected on the market, the Kindle could be one of the top electronics gifts of the upcoming holiday season, along with Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) newest iPhone, Citigroup (NYSE: C) said. “Turns out the Kindle is becoming the iPod of the book world,” Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney wrote in a note to clients. He kept a “buy” rating on the share. (Read the full post about ‘Amazon Kindle: The iPod of Book Readers?’…)

Verisign Aims to Deflate ‘Pump and Dump’ Scams

Autor admin | 11.08.2008 | Category SEO

Verisign is taking a new approach to the battle against so-called “pump and dump” schemes that artificially hype stocks.

A new module for the company’s VIP Fraud Detection Service, set for release this Friday, features a “self-learning” behavioral engine designed help brokerages spot and avoid pump and dump activity. The system works by weighing a number of factors, including stock risk, user behaviors, how trading compares to known fraudulent trades and the volume of trading for a particular stock.

The idea is to help Verisign’s (NASDAQ: VRSN) online brokerage customers prevent scammers from manipulating thinly traded stocks using hype and rumor sent via “urgent”-looking spam e-mails and other means.

Did Dan Kaminsky Save the Internet?

Did Dan Kaminsky save the Internet?

Yes and no.

He paraded around the press room (in the limited time I was there avoiding being hacked by French journalists/hackers) like he was a conquering hero, promoting himself and his message.

Most of the journos in the room threw him adoring comments and questions like “So was this really a big deal?” to which Kaminsky would sarcastically reply, “Naaaw, not really.” I saw him hold court with a few journalists, and he seemed to really be enjoying himself.

Yahoo Offers Murky Look at Google Search Deal
Source: Reuters Yahoo has given the public its first glimpse of its new ad partnership with Google in a regulatory filing, though anyone looking for the nuts and bolts of the tie-up will be a little disappointed with the heavily redacted submission to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Throughout the document, omissions appear denoted with an asterisk, which indicates that “Confidential treatment has been requested with respect to the omitted portions,” according to the filing. The advertising alliance, announced in June, will see Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) providing a certain number of text ads next to the results pages of Yahoo’s (NASDAQ: YHOO) search engine. Online Publishers Turning to Ad Networks to Sell Unused Inventory

Online Publishers Turning to Ad Networks to Sell Unused Inventory

Online publishers are increasingly turning to ad networks to sell unused inventory, according to a study released by the International Advertising Bureau (IAB) and Bain & Company.

In 2007, ad network accounted for 30% of total ad impressions, up fro 5% in 2006.

Two reasons were given for the growth:

  • Interviews with online publishers, conducted as part of the study, indicate that the lack of adequate pricing tools and inventory management discipline contributed to the growth in available ad space. This is causing publishers to seek out ways to sell large inventories of unsold ads.

Microsoft Eyes Hollywood Deals to Trump iPod
Source: Reuters Microsoft’s Zune is looking to Hollywood to gain an edge on Apple’s iPod. Microsoft executives have been making the rounds at talent agencies and production companies in recent months in hopes of licensing exclusive original video programming for the portable media player, which has struggled to gain traction in the marketplace. While Microsoft has denied persistent rumors that Zune would expand into communications a la Apple’s iPhone, the company confirmed being in an “exploratory phase” regarding supplementing the TV content it already licenses from studios with Zune-only fare.
