AOL Ready for Separation, Spin-off?
Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) said today that it plans to split AOL’s content and advertising business from its dial-up ISP unit by the beginning of next year, as it reported second-quarter profits slightly better than analysts expected. The planned split of Time Warner’s Internet unit comes as part of a broader evolution in the media conglomerate that includes unloading its stake in Time Warner Cable, CEO Jeff Bewkes said this morning. “As we continue to reshape Time Warner, we’ll increasingly focus on our goal to create and manage high-quality branded content, across multiple platforms around the world, at the highest returns possible for our stockholders,” Bewkes said in a statement. Will Design Flaws Flunk Firefox?

Will Design Flaws Flunk Firefox?
LAS VEGAS — The open source Mozilla Firefox Web browser is potentially at risk from design flaws that could allegedly let attackers take whatever they want from users’ computers. Radware Security researcher Itzik Kotler is alleging that he can exploit Mozilla Firefox, and he’s going to demonstrate how at Black Hat. Kotler’s exploit framework for Firefox is called Jinx, and it utilizes JavaScript to enable an attacker to read anything from a user’s hard drive. Jinx could potentially put millions of users at risk if Kotler is correct in his risk assessment. Mozilla is concerned about the issue, though it isn’t certain of what the risk actually is to users. Woohoo for Yahoo

Autor admin | 06.08.2008 | Category SEO

Two things happened in the last week that may just restore my faith in humanity. First, Carl Icahn found his way to compromise. Second, Yahoo’s shareholders re-elected the board and decided to keep Jerry Yang at the helm…for now.

Even after the vote re-count, a majority of shareholders voted the board in and Icahn settled for the right to propose two board seats and a spot for himself. In doing so, Icahn proved the last several months of back and forth on who should be running Yahoo is more than self-indulgent oral flatus.

At the end of the day, what’s more important than rebuilding the Web’s biggest brand? Why the compromise now? Who should really be running Yahoo?

How Long Should My Landing Page Test Run?

Autor admin | 06.08.2008 | Category SEO

I’m often asked how long a landing page optimization test should run. The answer depends on these factors:

  • The data rate (number of conversions per day).
  • Size of improvements found (percentage improvement).
  • Size of your test (number of alternative designs or “recipes”).
  • The confidence in your answer (how sure you need to be).

Today, we’ll cover the first three factors.

Data Rate

The data rate describes how quickly you collect data during your test. The volume of traffic for landing page optimization tests is best measured in the number of conversion actions per day (and not the number of unique visitors).

Time Warner Maps Out AOL Split

Autor admin | 06.08.2008 | Category SEO

Time Warner said it would split AOL’s dial-up Internet and advertising businesses into separate divisions by early 2009 and reported a slightly higher-than-expected quarterly profit, citing strong cable advertising sales and films like “Sex and the City.”

By shedding the cable division by the end of the year and splitting the AOL business, Time Warner (NYSE: TWX) plans to focus on creating content rather than bolstering its distribution business.

In the clearest sign yet of how the company sees its future, Time Warner Chief Jeffrey Bewkes said in a statement, “As we continue to reshape Time Warner, we’ll increasingly focus on our goal to create and manage high-quality branded content.”

The anticipated split of AOL into two divisions is seen facilitating a sale or merger of either unit.

The Pitfalls of Open Source Litigation

The Pitfalls of Open Source Litigation
SAN FRANCISCO — Optimists say the best things in life are free; realists say yes, but anything that’s free costs way too much. Nowhere is that more applicable than in open source (define) software. Enterprises using open source are being sued for not complying with the multitude of licenses the software comes with. The problem is that open source software developers call in code from other open source applications. “If you’re using only a few open software packages, you’re actually using a whole lot more applications because open software builds on things other people have done,” Stormy Peters, executive director of the Gnome Foundation, a nonprofit organization that coordinates the efforts of the Gnome Project, told a presentation today on avoiding open source lawsuits. Google Gadgets Under Attack at Black Hat

Google Gadgets Under Attack at Black Hat
Google Gadgets are supposed to be easy-to-use components that enable users to put content and small applications wherever they want them. According to Tom Stracener a Cenzic Senior Security Analyst, Google Gadgets can also potentially be used as a platform for user exploitation. In a presentation to be delivered at the Black Hat security conference, Stracener will explain in gory detail how gadgets can be used to attack other gadgets and ultimately end users. The impact could range from a loss of confidential information to arbitrary code execution. Google argues, however, that though any gadget could be a target for malware, the company is already actively taking precautions to protect users. New Yahoo Election Tally Reveals big Protest Vote

Autor admin | 06.08.2008 | Category SEO

Yahoo Inc on Tuesday released a recount of the vote for its board that sharply altered the results, revealing a strong protest vote against five of nine directors including CEO Jerry Yang.

The Internet company said revised vote tallies showed 33.7 percent of votes withheld for Yang, the company’s co-founder, with 66.3 percent in favor of him remaining on its board.

It was originally thought that Yang had been reelected with 85 percent of the vote.

Yang has been under pressure for months over failed attempts by Microsoft Corp to buy the company and over questions about his leadership, but Friday’s shareholder vote had suggested the tide was turning in his favor.
