Another Charge up the Hill for Broadband Policy

Regardless of who wins the presidency in November, change is on its way to Washington.
In that spirit, the Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA) has unfurled a campaign to press for policies that will speed the development of broadband networks, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that every American has access to a high-speed Internet connection.
“We start from the belief that broadband is integral to solving the big national challenges,” IIA cofounder and cochairman Bruce Mehlman told InternetNews.com. “We want to get as many voices echoing that sentiment as possible. There’s a lot of alignment on the need for ubiquitous broadband and faster broadband and competitive broadband.”
If that language sounds familiar, it should.

Sun Moves JavaFX Closer to Primetime

Sun Microsystems has finally released a software development kit (SDK) for JavaFX, two JavaOne conferences after it announced the rich client platform meant to take on Adobe’s AIR and Flex platforms and Microsoft’s Silverlight.
The release consists of three components: the SDK itself, a plug-in for the NetBeans integrated development environment (IDE) to help Java programmers build their JavaFX apps, and Project Nile, a bi-directional integration layer with Adobe Photoship and Illustrator.
The SDK has two sets of APIs, one for building applications that run across platforms, and one for building desktop applications.

JupiterResearch Acquired by Forrester for $23 Million
After being owner-less for a little over a year, JupiterResearch has been acquired by Forrester Research for $23 million. Previously, JupiterResearch had been sold by Jupitermedia to Kagan Research, but then Kagan got acquired by financial business intelligence firm SNL Financial.
“We are very excited to be joining the Forrester brand, culture, and community,” said David Schatsky, president, JupiterResearch. “For a quarter of a century, Forrester has been a trusted advisor to many of the top businesses and organizations in the world, and we are honored to bring the best of JupiterResearch to the Forrester name.”
JupiterResearch is the source of a ton of great online marketing data.

Yuil Is Dead - Long Live Yuil Today TechCrunch reported on the birth of a new search engine: Yuil. Now Yuil is dead. Yuil (pronounced yule) was a short-lived Yahoo-powered mashup designed to look like Cuil. Apparently the Yahoo Boss mashup — something of a search engine Frankenstein monster — was destroyed by its inventor. Yuil was designed by Yahoo VP of Platforms, Sam Pullara. Yuil was a brilliant marketing move designed to show off the new Yahoo BOSS API. BOSS gives developers a high level of control over SERPs generated by Yahoo’s search engine. SaaS E-commerce Services on the Rise

By 2013, 90 percent of e-commerce sites will use at least one product from software as a service, or SaaS(define) vendors, according to a Gartner report released today. And 40 percent of e-commerce sites will use a complete SaaS solution.
These sites will be put up mainly by SMBs and smaller companies, although some large enterprises will use SaaS as a way to experiment in new markets. “You’ll have new entrants who will help grow the market, and you’ll also have experimentation by the bigger companies,” Gartner analyst Gene Alvarez told InternetNews.com.
The bigger e-commerce players, however, will not use SaaS because they’ll want to preserve the uniqueness of their sites, Gartner said.

IOC ‘Surprised’ by Olympics Censorship

BEIJING — The media should have been told they would not have total Internet freedom before arriving for the Beijing Olympics, a senior IOC official said on Thursday, as rights groups piled criticism on both the IOC and host China.
As the row over censorship continued, International Olympic Committee (IOC) press chief Kevan Gosper told Reuters that both he and the international media had been taken by surprise that some politically sensitive websites had been blocked.
“It’s learning of it at almost the last minute that I think is destabilizing the international media and certainly embarrassing for me, as up till 48 hours ago I was insisting it would be free and uncensored Internet access,” Gosper said.

Apple: Out of Touch With Server Room Needs

Here’s a great idea to put to your CIO: Why not run the company using a server operating system made by Mattel? It’s the company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels (not to mention Tumblin’ Monkeys), so it certainly knows a thing or two about toys. Maybe its designers have enough time to put together an enterprise OS.
Yeah, right. The idea is plain ridiculous, but is it any more ridiculous than using Apple’s OS X Server or letting end users work on Macs in the enterprise?
Because the truth is, Apple is not really a computer company. It makes toys. It used to be a computer company called Apple Computer, but it dropped the “Computer” bit from its name in January 2007 as a tacit admission that it was now a consumer gadget maker, not to mention an online music retailer.

Surprise! Motorola Turnaround Yields Small Profit

Motorola’s much-touted turnaround may finally be showing some signs of progress, posting a surprise profit — albeit a tiny one.
For its second quarter, the 80-year-old handset maker reported earnings of $4 million, breakeven on a per-share basis, citing strong demand for home and business networking devices. It also credited success on plans to cut operating costs by $1 billion this year.
Wall Street had expected a loss of 3 cents per share, according to Thomson Financial.
While the business isn’t out of the woods yet — revenue beat estimates of $7.69 billion but fell 7 percent to $8.1 billion from a year ago — Motorola (NYSE: MOT) CEO Greg Brown said the numbers point to success in the massive turnaround effort he’s driven since taking over the top spot early this year.

The Future of SEM Education

I heard a political pundit the other day say something to the effect that the economy isn’t in the toilet, but it’s heading towards that room of the house. With gas prices (and everything prices) jumping and running and stalling to sprint again, one could ask, “What is the future of search?” This leads to the question: What is the future necessity of SEM education?
State of the Market
Much like our own presidential report every January, SEMPO recently completed their State of the Market 2007 report, releasing these key findings:
- The North American SEM industry grew from $9.4 billion in 2006 to $12.2 billion in 2007, exceeding earlier projections of $11.5 billion for 2007.
- North American SEM spending is now projected to grow to $25.2 billion in 2011, up significantly from the $18.6 billion forecast a year ago.
