Autor admin | 19.06.2008 | Category SEO

A former Nortel Networks Corp chief executive and two of his lieutenants were charged on Thursday with fraudulently misstating financial results as the telephone equipment maker struggled to right itself after the tech bubble burst in 2001.

Aside from ex-CEO Frank Dunn, who faces seven counts, former Chief Financial Officer Douglas Beatty, and Michael Gollogly, Nortel’s former corporate controller, also face charges, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged them with fraud in March, 2007.

Semantic Search Engine hakia Launches Syndication Web Services

Semantic search engine, hakia, has announced the launch of Syndication Web Services. The new service will allow third parties to use hakia search on websites, mobile applications and document management systems. Site owners can offer hakia’s generic search, implement a custom search, or utilize a vertical search on their websites.

I spoke with hakia CEO Dr. Riza Berkan, and he says that the advantage with hakia’s web search is the focus on the quality instead of popularity when it comes to delivering search results.

Clock Ticking on Yahoo/Google Ad Pact

Autor admin | 19.06.2008 | Category SEO

The clock is ticking on a regulatory review of Yahoo’s ad deal with Google.

That may help explain why Yahoo’s CEO, Jerry Yang, made the rounds in Washington on Wednesday. Yang met with key lawmakers to address growing concerns that the partnership could harm competition and threaten consumer privacy.

The Justice Department has already begun an official review of any potential antitrust implications of the deal, Gina Talamona, a spokeswoman for the department, told InternetNews.com.

Announced last week as Yahoo ended acquisition talks with Microsoft, the Yahoo/Google pact would place ads from Google alongside Yahoo’s search results and throughout its network of sites.

Cable to Telecom: Can’t We All Get Along?
LAS VEGAS — There was a time when telecom companies just delivered phone service and cable companies just delivered cable television. That’s not the case anymore with cable companies selling phone services and telecoms selling TV. In a keynote session here at the NXTcomm conference, Richard Green, president and CEO of CableLabs, asked the telecom industry to join with the cable industry in some interoperability initiatives to help everyone grow. “We’re all in the same business now,” Green told the audience. “Open platforms in the access network are critical to attracting content.” CableLabs is a consortium of U.S. cable operators that helps to define standards for the cable industry. Quality Score Now Affected by Landing Page Load Time

Google warned us this would happen and beginning today, landing page load times will affect Adwords Quality Score. The reason behind the change is something that Google often touts: it’s what’s best for the user. Google argues that faster load times are better for users, so pages that load faster will be rewarded accordingly.

In May, the Adwords team launched a load time metric to help you evaluate your pages.

And you might be surprised what you can do to improve your load times - and increase your conversions. Recently, the Website Optimizer team suggested testing best practices. They gave an example of a page that removed an image of a customer service rep.

Linux vendor Red Hat (NYSE: RHT) is hoping that the open source community will join it on a Spacewalk.

The Spacewalk effort is a new open source management project launched at the Red Hat Summit in Boston alongside a series of virtualization and identity management solutions.

The new open source efforts from Red Hat help to round out the Linux vendor’s solutions in areas in which it hopes to grow its business and ward off proprietary vendors such as Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).

The Link Bait Recipe

Autor admin | 19.06.2008 | Category SEO

I read Frank Watson’s “What is Valid Link Bait?” column with great interest. Link bait interests me both personally and from a business perspective.

When it comes to Link Love, my philosophy is to always start with great, compelling content and then the links will follow naturally.

Frank’s article, along with Chris Boggs’ Crossfire follow-up, is important reading when considering this topic. At the end of Frank’s article he states, “So, determining what is valid link bait may go beyond morality, and be more the power of the person doing them and who they know.”

“Beyond morality.” That’s huge. Frank is onto something crucial here. Perhaps morality is mundane.

HP Plans to Overhaul Printer Unit

Autor admin | 19.06.2008 | Category SEO

Source: Reuters Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) will reorganize its printer operations, trimming its five business units to three in a bid to become more efficient, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

The announcement was made in a Webcast to employees on Wednesday by print division chief Vyomesh Joshi, the newspaper reported in its online edition.

The changes will consolidate HP’s laser-jet and commercial-printer units into one, change the head of the graphics unit and combine the ink-jet and consumer-supplies units.

The printing division has already eliminated hundreds of jobs in its offices in Idaho, Oregon and Washington State, but the company said the new move would not result in large-scale lay-offs.

Scrutiny Ahead for Yahoo-Google Deal?

Autor admin | 19.06.2008 | Category SEO

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) face intense U.S. Justice Department scrutiny of their deal to share some advertising revenue, and the heat will likely increase under a new administration, antitrust experts said.

Google, with more than 60 percent of the Web search market, and Yahoo, with 16.6 percent, announced a deal last week that would allow Yahoo to place Google ads on its site and collect the revenue.

The firms said Yahoo’s cash flow could grow by $250 million to $450 million in the first year under the deal, which Yahoo sought as an alternative to software giant Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) $47.5 billion buyout offer.

Yahoo and Google describe the deal as very limited.

Sprint CEO: The Future Is Open (to Speed)

Autor admin | 19.06.2008 | Category SEO

LAS VEGAS — After only six months on the job as President and CEO at Sprint Nextel, Dan Hesse figures he’s in great shape.

“It’s a great time to be in the wireless industry,” Hesse told the audience. “Today there is one cell phone for every 2 people on Earth. Mobile’s best days may still be ahead with data usage on the rise.”

In an expansive keynote address at the NXTcomm trade show Hesse detailed what Sprint Nextel is doing now and where he plans on taking it moving forward. He also used his turn at the podium to poke rival AT&T’s 3G iPhone initiative in the eye.

Hesse noted that Sprint Nextel has the largest data network in America and it covers more areas in the US than any other carrier.
