Concentric To Host Exchange Services

Autor admin | 17.06.2008 | Category SEO

Microsoft announced Monday that hosted applications provider Concentric will offer hosted Exchange 2007 packages to small and medium-sized business customers beginning on July 15.

According to a statement by the two companies, Concentric will provide four hosted Exchange offerings as a lower-cost alternative for customers who cannot afford the high startup costs of setting up Exchange 2007 and hosting it themselves.

The announcement came at the NXTcomm08 conference, which is being held in Las Vegas this week. Concentric has been in the hosting business for more than ten years. However, this is the first time that Concentric has offered hosted Exchange e-mail services, a Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) spokesperson confirmed.

Enterprises Face Barrage of Software Audits

Autor admin | 17.06.2008 | Category SEO

The typical enterprise has almost a 70 percent chance of not being in compliance with its software-license agreements, and it has a 60 percent chance of having unlicensed software deployed.

These findings, from a survey of more than 350 IT professionals conducted recently by King Research, aren’t just troubling; they could spell big trouble for corporations, as software companies hurt by falling sales due to software piracy seek other sources of revenue.

One avenue will be audits on software license compliance.

When a corporation fails its license-compliance audit, it must delete the unlicensed applications and reinstall new, licensed versions from the software company.

AT&T CEO: Connectivity Drives Prosperity
LAS VEGAS — AT&T (NYSE: T) is driving global prosperity. At least, that’s the thinking of Randall Stephenson, chairman and CEO of the country’s No. 1 wireless carrier, during his opening keynote here at the NXTcomm conference. Stephenson, no stranger to NXTcomm after kicking off the show in Chicago last year, delivered a message today detailing the industry’s incredible growth potential and the opportunity for fixed and mobile networks to dramatically improve people’s lives. But that sentiment comes against a backdrop of macroeconomic malaise in the United States, a rapidly changing telecom landscape thanks to growing demand for wireless data and furious competition among the country’s major wireless carriers. What Is the Future of Telecom?
LAS VEGAS — For the big U.S. telecom networks, the telephone itself is now the least of their worries as they form the backbone of all forms of data connectivity — the Internet, video and mobility. In a panel session at NXTcomm, top technology executives from AT&T (NYSE: T), Verizon (NYSE: VZ) and Qwest (NYSE: Q) discussed how their networks are dealing with video, green initiatives and networking demand. In terms of video, things are looking up. “We have 1.2 million customers for FiOS and plan to add an additional 60 channels of content so things are going really well,” said Mark Wegleitner, Verizon’s senior vice president of technology and networking planning. Stocks Tumbles as Worries Mount

Autor admin | 17.06.2008 | Category SEO

Higher than expected wholesale inflation data and more worries about the health of financial firms sent stocks tumbling once again on Tuesday.

Tech stocks were led lower by Adobe Systems (NASDAQ: ADBE), which lost 3.4% on sales guidance that was potentially below Wall Street estimates.

But Mentor Graphics (NASDAQ: MENT) was a big winner, soaring 22% on a takeover offer from Cadence Design (NASDAQ: CDNS).

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) were among the very few gainers on the Nasdaq most active list.

Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) tacked on 1.5% on an upbeat outlook from Goldman Sachs.

Alcatel Lucent (NYSE: ALU) rose 4% on a $1 billion deal with China Mobile.

Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) fell 5% after reporting a drop in earnings.

The Nasdaq fell 17 to 2457, the S&P lost 9 to 1350, and the Dow tumbled 108 to 12,160.

Citywide Wi-Fi On Again in Philly

Autor admin | 17.06.2008 | Category SEO

Philadelphia revived an effort on Tuesday to provide free citywide wireless Internet access in a project to be run by a new group of investors.

The city aims to provide free-of-charge outdoor Web access throughout its 135 square miles, which would be the largest area covered by public Wi-Fi of any U.S. city.

The project, initially launched in 2005, came close to failure when EarthLink, the company that installed wireless transmitters on light poles, abandoned the effort in May amid complaints about signal weakness.

In a city of 1.4 million, about 6,000 people signed up for the EarthLink service.

Yahoo Extends Mobile Reach in Asia

As analysts and pundits noisily question the wisdom of Yahoo’s alliance with archrival Google in what seemed a deal struck out of desperation, Yahoo presses forward with its mobile strategy, detailing a series of partnerships struck far away from the whirlwind in Silicon Valley and Wall Street.

At this year’s CommunicAsia mobile conference in Singapore, Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) said today that it has linked up with five regional carriers to make its oneSearch the default search engine on their networks.

Yahoo also inked deals to sell and serve mobile display ads deals with two Asian carriers, Malaysia’s Maxis Communications and India’s Idea Cellular Limited.

From L.A. to Vegas With 100GbE

Autor admin | 17.06.2008 | Category SEO

LAS VEGAS — The race for faster Internet connection speeds just blazed past a milestone with one of the first public demonstrations of a working 100 GbE (100 Gigabit Ethernet) link.

The demonstration is at the NXTcomm conference and trade show in Las Vegas and involved a return loop of 100GbE traffic to Las Angeles. Infinera, Avago and Ixia are the equipment suppliers for the 100GbE feat, which traveled over the XO network.

The 100GbE link is not compliant with the IEEE (define) standard because it doesn’t yet exist (though there are a pair of approved baseline standards that have been approved, which is what the Los Angeles to Las Vegas link are leveraging).
