Yahoo Google Deal: Yahoo Adds AdWords Search Deal

Yahoo signed a new advertising deal with Google that will face antitrust scrutiny during the next 90 days or so. The deal, which will not be executed until regulatory review is completed, will allow Yahoo to display some ads sold by Google.

U.S. Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), chairman of the Senate Antitrust Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to the announcement by Google and Yahoo:

“We will closely examine the joint venture between Google and Yahoo announced today. This collaboration between two technology giants and direct competitors for Internet advertising and search services raises important competition concerns.

Two dozen search blogs buzzing about SEM conference

If you’re getting ready to go to Search Engine Strategies Toronto next week – or still on the fence about whether to attend SES Toronto June 16-18 – then check out the buzz from more than two dozen search blogs that has been leading up to the SEM conference.

If fact, the buzz in Canada has been louder this year than the one coming from the periodical cicadas that emerge every 17 years from underground haunts on Cape Cod. (Hey, I’m not making this up. Just read “Cape is again abuzz” from The Boston Globe.)

What Google calls “the buzzing blogger community” has been blogging about the speakers who will be speaking at Search Engine Strategies Toronto.

Google Mobile Search Feels the Need for Speed

Mobile is the wave of the future and accessing the web is increasingly becoming a must for mobile phone users. Smartphone sales are up and the iPhone is hot! But the internet is not as fast on your phone as it is on your laptop. That’s why Google’s news about an update to mobile search will come as welcome news to many.

Writing on the Google Mobile blog, Software Engineer James Watts explains:

“When you navigate to google.com in your browser, we cache the homepage on your phone. If you bookmark this homepage, then returning to Google using the bookmark is almost instantaneous.”

iGoogle has also been improved for mobile.

Those Creeping Unified Communications

New research on the adoption and deployment of unified communications suggests that most enterprises are still challenged by integrating needed applications with telephony platforms.

Nemertes Research, which just completed interviews with 117 end user organizations averaging $10 billion in revenue, said preliminary data showed that while UC projects are moving forward, the effort is still facing hurdles within most companies.

Unified communications ties instant messaging, e-mail, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), presence technology, as well as video and Web conference capabilities.

“About 99 percent of organizations have VoIP,” Irwin Lazar, Nemertes principle research analyst and program director, told InternetNews.com.

Analysts to Microsoft: ‘Yahoo? Time to Move On’

Remember that feeling as a kid when you had a crush on someone but that person obviously preferred the company of someone else – two’s company, three’s a crowd?

Microsoft execs must have that left out feeling about now.

After formerly pursuing Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) only to have the number two search player not only reject Microsoft’s (NASDAQ: MSFT) advances but to have the Yahoos announce an expanded advertising deal with arch competitor Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Thursday, the Redmondians are currently the wall flowers of the dance.

The key question is ‘What will Microsoft do now?’ Or perhaps that would be What ’should’ Microsoft do now?

Technical Analysis: Bulls Push Ahead

We’ll add one more data point to the bullish evidence here: a nice move this week into S&P long positions by commercial traders this week.

Now all we need is for the market-friendly sentiment to show up in stock prices.
