NEW YORK — Verizon, Sprint and Time Warner Cable have agreed to block Internet bulletin boards and Web sites nationwide that disseminate child pornography, New York’s attorney general announced on Tuesday.
The ISPs also agreed with New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to contribute more than $1.1 million to help the state combat the spread of child pornography. The news was first reported in the New York Times late on Monday.
The companies have agreed to block access to newsgroups that traffic such images on one of the oldest online outposts, known as Usenet, as well as sites that host child pornography.
The agreements will affect customers not just in New York but throughout the country.

Yahoo Defends Severance Packages
Autor admin | 11.06.2008 | Category SEO

As it girds for war with billionaire investor Carl Icahn, Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) has made public a detailed explanation of the controversial severance plan that has become a flash point in the fight over company control. In an SEC filing last night, Yahoo provided a long list of frequently asked questions about the severance packages taken from the company’s intranet. The filing reads as a public defense of the provision, reiterating and elaborating on Yahoo’s chief talking point that they were necessary during a “period of uncertainty” for the company. Enacted in February as Yahoo fortified its position against Microsoft’s bid to acquire the company, the severance packages provide for up to two years’ salary for employees who are fired or leave for “good reason” in the event of a change in control of the company. Another Day, Another Stock Market Plunge
Autor admin | 11.06.2008 | Category SEO
Stocks plunged once again Wednesday on the twin fears of rising inflation and stagnant economic growth.
Another spike in oil prices, more tough talk on inflation from the Federal Reserve, another round of credit market fears, and a weak Fed report on economic conditions sent stocks to multi-month lows.
Tech stocks were hit after the Semiconductor Industry Association lowered its 2008 semiconductor sales growth forecast, citing memory pricing pressures. The chip sector lost nearly 3% on the day, and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) shed 3.8%.

Microsoft has quietly hired the founder of antispam Web site CastleCops.com to work on its own antispam efforts regarding the company’s consumer Live services initiative.
CastleCops founder and administrator Paul Laudanski announced the move a week ago in a post on the site’s blog, although he actually started his new job at Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) last month.
“Effective May 16th I have accepted a new opportunity as a full-time Internet safety investigator for Microsoft’s Live consumer services, Laudanski wrote in his post. “My areas include investigations into phishing, spam, and other Live service abuses.”
In the meantime, Laudanski is looking for someone to take over CastleCops.

Scalent Takes VM Management to New Level

When enterprises implement virtualization in their datacenters, they can drastically reduce the number of physical servers they have, as physical servers are only switched on and deployed when business needs peak.
This has led to savings, but also to a new problem: Provisioning (define) a virtual machine (VM) from a physical server is much easier than doing the opposite. Reprovisioning a physical server from a virtual one, known as going V2P in the trade, takes a lot of work.
Scalent claims to have solved that problem with version 2.5 of its Scalent Virtual Operating Environment (V/OE), unveiled today.

Room for More in BIND DNS Release
Autor admin | 11.06.2008 | Category SEO
Though DNS (define), the Domain Name Service that translates domain names into IP addresses, has been in use for 25 years, there is always room for it to improve.
The same is true for BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain), which has been around since 1985 and is widely considered the pre-eminent DNS server.
With the release of BIND 9.5 this week, the open source DNS server takes another step forward with new statistics, improved ActiveDirectory support and support for DHCID (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Information).
The improvements suggest that innovation in DNS marches on, as well as timing. The latest BIND 9.5 follows the BIND 9.4 release by nearly 15 months.

Yahoo Exec Set to Bail?

Yahoo Exec Set to Bail?
Yahoo’s Jeff Weiner, Network Division Executive Vice President, is rumored to be leaving the company after a month’s long paternity leave, according to Kara Swisher. Weiner is reportedly tired of all the drama caused by the failed Microsoft acquisition and Carl Icahn’s proxy board. Weiner may become an executive in residence at a Silicon Valley venture capitalist firm (he wouldn’t be the first to do so).
Four Senior Vice Presidents are rumored to be the most likely candidates to fill Weiner’s shoes.
- Front Door and Network Services’ Tapan Bhat
- Brad Garlinghouse, who heads Yahoo’s communications and communities arenas
- Media Group head Scott Moore
- Yahoo Search’s Vish Makhijani
A fifth option is not to replace Weiner at all and to re-organize the company structure once more.

Advertisers Grapple With Social Media
Autor admin | 11.06.2008 | Category SEO
NEW YORK — It would be strange for an advertising conference these days to run its course without taking up social media.
Here at the biannual gathering of the Direct Marketing Association, where the attendees are used to trading on measurable actions such as click-throughs and response rates, the social media phenomenon is particularly challenging.
“In my mind it’s not about the toys,” said Marc Schwartz, a strategy director of the interactive division at the agency DDB. “The key thing is to have some understanding of where the conversations are taking place and what is the right entry point.”
The toys that Schwartz was referring to are the blogs, widgets, social bookmarks and the many other special features of the Web 2.0 phenomenon that have marketers excited over advertising potential but still struggling with the bottom line.
