Software Sales in ‘SaaSy’ Transition

Autor admin | 06.06.2008 | Category SEO

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Enterprise software vendors take notice: Slick doesn’t sell anymore.

That was one of the comments made at the Consumerization of Software conference here Thursday, co-sponsored by the nonprofit SD Forum tech industry association.

During one panel, corporate software vendors and venture capitalists described the radical shift in the way software is being sold — a change brought about by new ways that technologies infiltrate the enterprise, courtesy of developments like social networking and Software as a Service (Saas), which found their original footing in the consumer space.

Alltel, Verizon Merger Not a Win-Win for All

Autor admin | 06.06.2008 | Category SEO

The proposed merger of Verizon Wireless and rural carrier Alltel has garnered a mixed reaction among industry observers and customers.

Two things everyone does agree on, however, is that the $28.1 billion acquisition will happen and will certainly benefit the carriers involved.

But it’s debate 101 when it comes to other issues, including consumer impact, the need for regulatory controls and future telecom innovation.

For sure, today’s dominant carrier, AT&T (NYSE: T), can’t be too thrilled, nor can Sprint-Nextel (NYSE: N), though neither wireless vendor is showing any fear at this point.

Keywords Without Ego

Autor admin | 06.06.2008 | Category SEO

Why is the value of SEO based solely on how well a keyword ranks? While it’s hard to ask that without Andy Rooney’s voice playing in my head, it’s even harder for me to believe that all success should be measured by the improvement of a popular keyword.

High search frequency does not necessarily denote a great keyword. And ranking for a popular term does not a successful campaign make. While search positions give project managers a nice, clean number to report to their CEO, there’s more to SEO than just ranking.

SEO involves ranking for the right terms, and campaign metrics should be focused squarely on the bottom line.

Intel Targeted in FTC Antitrust Probe

Autor admin | 06.06.2008 | Category SEO

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has opened a formal antitrust investigation of semiconductor maker Intel for anticompetitive conduct, Intel and the FTC said on Thursday.

FTC spokeswoman Claudia Farrell confirmed the investigation existed, but declined to detail the agency’s concerns about Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), which makes chips that power more than 80 percent of the world’s computers.

But smaller rival AMD has long accused Intel of abusing its dominance of the chip market.

Intel received a subpoena from the FTC on Wednesday and will cooperate with the agency, the chipmaker said in a statement.

What is Valid Link Bait?

Autor admin | 06.06.2008 | Category SEO

The recent hoax of a 13-year-old ordering hookers on his father’s credit card started an interesting conversation about link bait. Obviously, this was an extreme example, but the responses seem to show that, as a group, our industry has very differing views on what is legitimate link bait.

Matt Cutts, the bouncer at Club Google, made his opinions clear in his blog that this was a wrong method on so many levels:

“My takeaway from this brouhaha: There are plenty of ways to market a site creatively without deceiving anyone. Don’t burn your credibility by using fake stories. It’s a short-term tactic and makes people trust you less in the future.”

Apparently that one hasn’t died, as I heard it was being discussed a bit at SMX Advanced.

Trial for Intel-AMD Dispute Delayed to 2010

Autor admin | 06.06.2008 | Category SEO

The trial date in a long-running legal battle between chip giant Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and smaller rival Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) was delayed until 2010, both companies said on Thursday.

In the lawsuit originally filed in 2005, AMD accused Intel of giving computer makers illegal discounts and retaliating against manufacturers who used AMD chips or stores that gave significant shelf space to computers with AMD chips.

Intel has denied any wrongdoing.

The two sides will split 250 days to depose witnesses, with AMD getting slightly more than Intel, said AMD attorney Chuck Diamond and Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy, both of whom were at a hearing at the U.S.

StumbleUpon Still Standing Under eBay

Autor admin | 06.06.2008 | Category SEO

Some startups are changed when acquired by large vendors, while others don’t change much at all. In the case of content-discovery service StumbleUpon, which was acquired by eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) in 2007 for $75 million, things haven’t changed all that much.

StumbleUpon still uses open source tools, and the company’s core mission remains the same, but with eBay as the parent, some subtle differences now exist.

Garrett Camp, founder and chief product officer at StumbleUpon, told InternetNews.com that management is more of a priority now.

“Before the acquisition it was very ad hoc, we had 15 people on staff, 10 of them technical.

Facebook Eyes Enterprise Market

Facebook Eyes Enterprise Market
PALO ALTO, Calif. — Instead of worrying about employees spending company time on Facebook, some enterprises may soon have reason to encourage the idea. At a conference on consumer services and applications in the enterprise here on Thursday, a Facebook executive confirmed the social networking giant has big plans to make its service more accessible to corporate users. “One area we’ve seen a lot of value for the social graph is in the enterprise because it’s a completely different way to envision an HR system or CRM,” said Chamath Palihapitiya, vice president of marketing and operations at Facebook.
