PC Buyers Think Small Amid Economic Slowdown

PC Buyers Think Small Amid Economic Slowdown
Asustek Eee PC Source: Reuters TAIPEI — Smaller, low-cost PCs are likely to be at the top of the shopping list for technology buyers gathering in Taipei this week for the world’s second largest computer fair, as an economic slowdown in the United States forces consumers to cut back on spending. Shoppers are feeling the pinch from rocketing fuel costs and rising prices, and in the United States the subprime crisis has left lenders less willing to hand over credit, leaving some consumers reluctant to buy new expensive personal computers and gadget-heavy mobile phones. Cheaper, low-cost PCs, such as Asustek Computer’s Eee computer, aimed at emerging markets and buyers of additional computers, may keep growth on track for many computer and component makers. What’s Wrong With IT?

Autor admin | 02.06.2008 | Category SEO

I’ve had it with our inability to get things done; our inability to acknowledge the real reasons why our field’s best practices get crippled the moment a meeting begins. Do we actually know what to do? Do we know how to optimize out IT investments? Of course we do. So what keeps us from getting the most out of IT?

Let’s start with management. Not IT management — we’ll get to that next — but to corporate management. By and large, nontechnology managers, directors and executives do not understand IT beyond its ability to support e-mail, spreadsheets and — occasionally — financial dashboards.

Many of them think that IT is easy, too slow, costs too much and is too unreliable.

Add Value to Twitter Tweets

Add Value to Twitter Tweets

There’s some value to Twitter “tweets” after all. If you carefully assemble sources, then more useful and search-friendly content is bound to emerge.

Newstex has already started to bundle tweets this way. It’s a natural progression for the company, which distributes real-time news feeds, commentary and blogs to corporate and financial users.

During the past few years, Newstex identified and signed up 4,000+ blogs and redistributed them to publishers such as Lexis-Nexis. With the twittering explosion, Newstex President Larry Schwartz wanted to deliver the added information coming from live tweets too.

I had a chance to catch up with Schwartz, to see if there’s demand for their Newstwits.

Microsoft Warns of Apple Flaw

Autor admin | 02.06.2008 | Category SEO

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is a company that usually keeps plenty busy advising users of security issues with its products. Redmond is now advising users about a blended security threat that involves users running Apple’s Safari Web browser on Windows.

The threat could potentially allow Safari to download a malicious file that Windows would then execute. Microsoft has a work-around it suggests, though no patch is available from Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) for the issue.

“Security Advisory (953818) does not refer to vulnerability in either Safari or Windows,” Tim Rains, security response communications lead for Microsoft said in a statement sent to InternetNews.com.

Google Mobile Advertising: It’s Time to Start

Google Mobile Advertising: It’s Time to Start
I’m going to switch gears starting this week and cover an aspect of PPC advertising that will become increasingly important to every advertiser: mobile advertising. I’ll start with some background to help you understand that the mobile advertising channel is already big and getting bigger. To do so, I’ll need to help you through a “paradigm shift” (as we used to say in the ’90s). Step 1 in your Mobile epiphany is to put aside the notion that “mobile advertising” = “cell phone advertising.” While the latter is a subset of the former, consider this: All phones will eventually be “Smartphones” — essentially handheld computers. Wanna Sling me that Web Page?

Autor admin | 02.06.2008 | Category SEO

Anyone who’s ever wanted to share a neat Web page with someone else knows the drill: cut-and-paste the link and send it via e-mail or instant message (IM) to whomever you want to see it.

Slingpage, which becomes available as a public beta on Monday, has a different idea.

“Sharing a Web site by sending a link is not necessarily real-time and it’s not interactive,” Peter Weinberg, CEO and founder of Slingpage, told InternetNews.com. “With Slingpage we’re moving Web surfing from a solo experience to more of a social browsing experience. You shouldn’t be limited to social networks to socialize.”

Slingpage is a browser extension that works with Internet Explorer (the company says its working on both Firefox and Mac support.
