Who’s Tops in U.S. Broadband Deployments?

Which U.S. state has the most high-speed Internet users?

According to Akamai’s new State of the Internet report, it’s tiny Delaware that ranks first in the nation, with over 60 percent of its connections to Akamai’s content delivery network coming in at 5 megabits per second (Mbps) or faster.

“The fact that Delaware was the leader in terms of high broadband connectivity was surprising — it’s not entirely clear why that was the case,” David Belson, Akamai’s director of market intelligence, told InternetNews.com. “It was surprising that California didn’t rank higher on the high broadband list.”

According to the company’s data, California did not crack the top-ten list for U.S.

Virtually Speaking: A Cut Above

Virtually Speaking: A Cut Above
It’s an accepted notion that blades and virtualization go together like peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and chocolate. Or whatever tried-and-true combination you prefer. The software architecture inherent in a virtualized environment is complementary to the hardware architecture of blades, and the combination is gaining traction. With that increased traction comes awareness of problems. One of the most prominent is I/O, which is bottle-necking virtual machine (VM) loaded servers across the board. Now, if Verari Systems and Xsigo Systems have their way, virtualized environments may get some relief. The two have partnered to deliver a solution that integrates Verari’s BladeRack 2 X-Series platform with Xsigo’s VP780 I/O Director. (Read the full post about ‘Virtually Speaking: A Cut Above’…)

Amazon in It for Long Haul With Kindle

Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO

Amazon might not be making any money with its Kindle e-book reader, but that’s not dampening the enthusiasm of the device’s most outspoken evangelist.

Addressing shareholders at the company’s annual meeting today, CEO Jeff Bezos gave an impassioned and lengthy pitch for the Kindle, shrugging off concerns that the device is still in the “investment phase.”

“One of our competitive advantages at Amazon is that we are willing to plant seeds — if we think the seed is important — and nurture it for a long time,” Bezos said. “Everything worthwhile that we’ve done, we’ve had to invest in for some number of years, so I doubt this will be any different.”

As in previous company earnings reports, Bezos declined to share any sales figures about the device.

Murdoch, Diller Weigh In on Microsoft-Yahoo Saga
Source: Reuters CARLSBAD, Calif. — Speculation over what it will take Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) to get together has turned into something of a CEO parlor game. Media magnate Rupert Murdoch said this week he is “mystified” the two have not come to terms. E-commerce mogul Barry Diller said Microsoft should never have fired a hostile shot at Yahoo if they didn’t plan to stick it out. Yahoo board member Bobby Kotick joked that he had tried to get top executives from Microsoft and Yahoo together to play Guitar Hero 4, the hit video game from the company he runs, Activision (NASDAQ: ATVI). Tackling Virtualized Environment Security

Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO

As enterprises gallop ahead towards virtualizing their IT infrastructures, security and compliance issues are going to slow them to a crawl.

That’s because virtual environment security is nothing like security in the physical environment.

Security measures in the physical environment are based on the servers being fixed, having a constant identity, and being easy to check on, but the virtual environment is always fluid, always changing and difficult to get a handle on.

Worse still, the tools and processes that ensure security in the physical environment just don’t work in a virtualized one.

Microsoft Pushes Devs with Wider IE8 Beta

Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO

Microsoft next quarter plans to launch a consumer beta test version of its Internet Explorer (IE) 8 browser — showcasing its upgraded compatibility with current standards.

The most obvious feature for consumers in IE8 Beta 2, as it’s known, is likely to be the browser’s new default rendering mode. The new mode will kick in for sites built using the most recently ratified Web standards — a so-called “super standards” mode that the company agreed to support in March.

However, besides supporting and potentially encouraging use of these standards on the Web, the change may also force Web developers and administrators to make modifications to what could be many of their sites.

Sun’s xVM Virtual Box Passes 5 Million Downloads

Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO

When Sun Microsystems unveiled its xVM Virtual Box high-performance desktop hypervisor, it expected a fairly good response - after all, the hypervisor (define) is open source and it’s free.

The response blew Sun away — xVM Virtual Box has been downloaded more than five million times in the 18 months since it was rolled out.

It lets users access software using Windows and Linux, and lets developers build, test and run cross-platform, multi-tier applications on a laptop or desktop.

Sun unveiled Virtual Box 1.6 May 2, adding full support for Mac OS X, Solaris and OpenSolaris, formerly beta features, as host operating systems; it also supports Linux, Solaris, OpenSolaris, Windows and OS/2 as guest operating systems.
