Ruby on Rails Performance Options Grow
Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO
Just because a developer can produce code quickly doesn’t necessarily make the code run fast.
That’s where new tools from vendors FiveRuns and New Relic come in. They ensure rapid delivery through its Ruby on Rails (RoR) performance profiling tools.
Ruby on Rails (RoR) is a popular open source development framework because it enables rapid application development.
The new performance management and profiling tools are important additions to the RoR development community as RoR moves from being a hobbyist development language to a bona fide enterprise development framework.

Google Launches Google Merchant Search Google Merchant Search has quietly launched as a test program to compare products and services in shopping comparison engine fashion. Google Merchant Search is a test feature, apparently in the UK, and is not available for every search. You may see it when conducting some searches but not others. Lead gen providers like Bankrate.com in financial services, one of Google’s largest customer segments, can’t be too pleased with Google offering a free service that competes indirectly with theirs. Our friends over at SearchEngineLand had the story first with “Outing Google Merchant Search” as if GMS were in the closet. Here’s the view from Google and their FAQ for Google Merchant Search. Testing Applies to Widgets and Accessories, Not Just Landing Pages
The Google Website Optimizer blog is serving up a helpful tip on testing widgets and other site accessories.
They gave an example of a popcorn company that tested their current trust seal against an upgraded one they were being pitched. The test also included a factor where there was no seal shown to visitors.
Having no seal at all performed poorly. But there was little difference between the old trust seal and the upgraded one. The popcorn company was able to put their money to better use than having a new seal on their site.
Do you test your widgets? Have any tips?

The local search marketplace continues to grow rapidly. Local is growing at a faster percentage rate than general search. Additionally, changes in search patterns show that consumers are becoming better and smarter searchers, moving from simple one- and two-keyword searches to more specific four- and five-keyword searches. click to enlarge Source: e-marketer The progression also shows important insights related to higher conversion rates for local search. The good news: consumers signal a higher purchase interest based on the number of keywords contained in their search query. In many cases, these compound search queries include explicit geographic local search terms. (Read the full post about ‘Winning the Local Search Battle’…)
Need Sitelinks? Show Google Your Site Is Useful
Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO
Last time, we discussed Google sitelinks and suggested some improvements to the system.
Today, we’ll explore some of the things Web site owners can do to affect changes to their selection of sitelinks, rather than stewing over how random sites are given sitelinks for terms like “auto insurance” and “fitness club.” (I received an e-mail suggesting some sort of “deal” Google has with sites that receive sitelinks for non-branded terms like those I mentioned. There is, of course, no way to confirm this, unless Google comes out and says it.)
Have No Sitelinks?
Not all sites are blessed with Google sitelinks.

Who’s Tops in U.S. Broadband Deployments?
Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO
Which U.S. state has the most high-speed Internet users?
According to Akamai’s new State of the Internet report, it’s tiny Delaware that ranks first in the nation, with over 60 percent of its connections to Akamai’s content delivery network coming in at 5 megabits per second (Mbps) or faster.
“The fact that Delaware was the leader in terms of high broadband connectivity was surprising — it’s not entirely clear why that was the case,” David Belson, Akamai’s director of market intelligence, told InternetNews.com. “It was surprising that California didn’t rank higher on the high broadband list.”
According to the company’s data, California did not crack the top-ten list for U.S.

Virtually Speaking: A Cut Above
Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO

It’s an accepted notion that blades and virtualization go together like peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and chocolate. Or whatever tried-and-true combination you prefer. The software architecture inherent in a virtualized environment is complementary to the hardware architecture of blades, and the combination is gaining traction. With that increased traction comes awareness of problems. One of the most prominent is I/O, which is bottle-necking virtual machine (VM) loaded servers across the board. Now, if Verari Systems and Xsigo Systems have their way, virtualized environments may get some relief. The two have partnered to deliver a solution that integrates Verari’s BladeRack 2 X-Series platform with Xsigo’s VP780 I/O Director. (Read the full post about ‘Virtually Speaking: A Cut Above’…)
Amazon in It for Long Haul With Kindle
Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO
Amazon might not be making any money with its Kindle e-book reader, but that’s not dampening the enthusiasm of the device’s most outspoken evangelist.
Addressing shareholders at the company’s annual meeting today, CEO Jeff Bezos gave an impassioned and lengthy pitch for the Kindle, shrugging off concerns that the device is still in the “investment phase.”
“One of our competitive advantages at Amazon is that we are willing to plant seeds — if we think the seed is important — and nurture it for a long time,” Bezos said. “Everything worthwhile that we’ve done, we’ve had to invest in for some number of years, so I doubt this will be any different.”
As in previous company earnings reports, Bezos declined to share any sales figures about the device.

Murdoch, Diller Weigh In on Microsoft-Yahoo Saga
Autor admin | 30.05.2008 | Category SEO

Source: Reuters CARLSBAD, Calif. — Speculation over what it will take Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) to get together has turned into something of a CEO parlor game. Media magnate Rupert Murdoch said this week he is “mystified” the two have not come to terms. E-commerce mogul Barry Diller said Microsoft should never have fired a hostile shot at Yahoo if they didn’t plan to stick it out. Yahoo board member Bobby Kotick joked that he had tried to get top executives from Microsoft and Yahoo together to play Guitar Hero 4, the hit video game from the company he runs, Activision (NASDAQ: ATVI).
