Internet Clips a Dilemma For Actors And Studios

Autor admin | 13.05.2008 | Category SEO

Getting Hollywood actors paid for their smallest performances — video clips on the Internet — is shaping up as one their biggest sticking points in stalemated contract negotiations with major studios.

Whether actors must give consent for snippets of their film and TV work to be displayed online, and how much they should earn for them, was the No. 1 disputed issue cited by the Screen Actors Guild after labor talks broke down last Tuesday.

Studios want to freely distribute YouTube-style clips of old TV shows and movies without seeking actors’ permission and pay them a flat fee rather than bargain on a price with each performer individually.

The actors’ union staunchly opposes that move.

Andreessen Knocks Would-Be Google Competitors
Marc Andreessen Source: ThinkPanmure HALF MOON BAY, Calif. – Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen had some words of advice for Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) and others who’d like to take on Google in search: Try something different. Speaking at ThinkPanmure’s ThinkTomorrow venture capital summit, Andreessen responded to a question about whether Google’s dominant position in search could be challenged. While he said he’s a big fan of Google (GOOG), he said plenty of opportunity exists for competitors. “If you put your hand over the logos of the other top search competitors, they all look like Google,” Andreessen said. After Buying EDS, Will HP Lose Focus?

Autor admin | 13.05.2008 | Category SEO

Although HP just plunked down $13.9 billion for EDS to expand in outsourcing and services business it may be some time before the computer giant sees results from the merger.

The deal creates a megafirm with $38 billion in combined revenues and 210,000 employees across more than 80 countries. Already, executives are hinting at layoffs to come, which will intensify the infighting and power struggles common in mergers and takeovers.

HP says the transaction is expected to close in the second half of this year, and will more than double HP’s services revenue over the 2007 figure of $16.6 billion.

Yahoo Chief Scientist Andrew Tomkins Interviewed by Eric Enge
Yahoo Chief Scientist Andrew Tomkins Interviewed by Eric Enge SEW Expert Eric Enge published a terrific interview on his Stone Temple blog with Yahoo Chief Scientist Andrew Tomkins, who keynoted SES New York. What makes it a great read? Eric asks spot-on questions that cut to the heart of the matter. Eric Enge: In New York you talked about the future of search, but the thing that really struck me in the conversation was the notion of “webmaster supplied content” communicated essentially directly to the search engine. Maybe you can tell me whether that notion resonates with you in just your general thoughts on the concepts that you laid out in the presentation? Don’t Hire a Butcher to do a Baker’s Job

Autor admin | 13.05.2008 | Category SEO

Our industry is hot. Red hot. As such, just about every idiot who has ever coded a page of HTML will tell you that they “do SEO.”

I’ve written before about how this gives our industry a bad rap. Companies get burned by said “SEO provider” and then are hesitant to go down the path again for fear that they will, once again, get burned.

SEO is hard enough. Our business is a moving target. We have to read constantly, stay on top of emerging trends, determine what the best course of action may be for our clients today, and ensure that we’re recommending strategies that will stand the test of time.

The latest release of Red Hat’s community Linux distribution, Fedora 9, a.k.a. ‘Sulfur’, is out. The Sulfur release adds a host of new features, including virtualization, authentication, networking, file system and yes, even features that will benefit desktop users.

The new Fedora is the first under the direction of Fedora Project Leader Paul Frields, who took the helm in February of this year. Fedora 9 is an important release for Red Hat, as it serves to underscore Red Hat’s commitment to community Linux development and toward the Linux desktop.

“The Linux desktop is absolutely not dead and if you look at the list of continued work that Red Hat invests heavily in you’ll see that the desktop is an important place to be technology wise,” Frields told InternetNews.com.

Small Business Owners Need Twitter and LinkedIn

Autor admin | 13.05.2008 | Category SEO

Small businesses have real opportunities for success using social media. Jeff Quipp, in his great article, “Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses,” wrote that it can help generate links, forge relationships, generate direct sales, and build a company’s authority in an industry.

However, Jeff missed two of my favorite social media sites: Twitter and LinkedIn. Consider this a companion piece to his great article, which you should go read as soon as you’re done with mine so you’ll be fully armed with some great social networking information.

Twitter

It’s all the rage lately — and with good reason. Twitter offers the ability to connect with a ton of people you normally wouldn’t have access to.

HP in Giant Services Play to Buy EDS?

Autor admin | 13.05.2008 | Category SEO

In a move that would bolster its services sector and further strengthen its profits, HP is reportedly planning to buy Electronic Data Systems (EDS).

HP declined comment. In a press release, HP confirmed it is “engaged in advanced discussions” with EDS about “a possible business combination involving the two companies” and warned that this did not mean a deal would be finalized. It also said HP would not comment further until either a deal is reached or talks are ended.

The deal, which could be announced as soon as Tuesday, would make HP (NYSE:HPQ) a powerhouse in the computer services industry and position it better to take on rival IBM (NYSE:IBM).
