Apple’s iPhone Off to Asia
Source: Reuters SAN FRANCISCO/SINGAPORE — Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has signed deals to bring the RiPhone to four Asian countries later this year, which should help the company surpass its sales goal of 10 million units by the end of 2008. Agreements with Singapore’s Singapore Telecommunications (STEL.SI) and three of its affiliates will bring the iPhone to Singapore, India, the Philippines and Australia, SingTel and Apple said. Bharti Airtel (BRTI.BO), India’s top mobile operator, will carry the iPhone in the world’s fastest-growing wireless market, which already has more than 260 million mobile users. Social Networking on Mobile Phones is Hot in the UK

Nielsen has released data showing the popularity of social networks being used via mobile phones in the UK. Here are three key takeaway points:

    Almost half (44%) of UK mobile phone subscribers belong to an online social network. Of this group, one in four (25%) use their mobile phone for social networking-related activities
  • Around 812,000 Britons each month, or 1.7% of all UK mobile subscribers, visited a social networking website using their mobile during the first quarter of 2008
  • Facebook is the most popular site for mobile social networking, being visited by over half a million Britons (557,000) from their mobiles, or 9% of all UK Mobile Internet subscribers

Kent Ferguson, Client Services Manager, Nielsen Mobile had this to say about the data: “Social networking is already a global phenomenon, and mobile could be the next big thing in the space.

A Bold New BlackBerry for Business
Source: Reuters Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) is launching a new high-end version of the BlackBerry aimed at its core base of business users, but it hopes the sleek device will also catch on in the broad retail market. Shares of RIM jumped on Monday, climbing C$6.20, or 4.7 percent, to C$139.55 on the Toronto Stock Exchange shortly after the opening bell. In New York, RIM was up $5.99, or 4.5 percent, at $138.76. The BlackBerry Bold, as the new smartphone is called, is the first BlackBerry to support high-speed HSDPA (define) cellular networks and comes with integrated GPS, Wi-Fi and a host of multimedia features. “It’s really a step up in function in many core aspects of the system,” RIM’s co-CEO Jim Balsillie said in an interview.
