Can Online Ads Survive ‘R’ Word?
Autor admin | 17.04.2008 | Category SEO
SAN FRANCISCO — Online media organizations pondered the prospects for Internet advertising growth during a panel discussion. The consensus: cautious optimism.
The best-case scenario put forth during the ad:tech conference here this week, was that interactive advertising would continue to suck dollars from traditional media. However, a lack of standards and measurability for newer online media, such as digital video and social networking, continues to slow the movement of dollars from the largest advertisers.
The Interactive Advertising Bureau, a trade organization, estimated interactive advertising revenues at nearly $6 billion in the last quarter of 2007 — before the mortgage meltdown and credit crunches really hit.

Hitachi Shakes Off Sale Plans
Autor admin | 17.04.2008 | Category SEO
Japan’s Hitachi (NYSE: HIT) has dropped plans to sell a stake in its troubled computer disk drive business and aims to turn the business around by going after market share and cutting costs, the head of the unit said on Thursday.
Hitachi’s determination to go it alone comes two days after Seagate Technology’s (NYSE: STX) outlook, hurt by price falls, missed expectations and sent its shares plummeting.
Hitachi, the world’s No. 3 maker of hard drives, last month broke off talks with U.S. private equity firm Silver Lake on bringing in fresh capital after the unit swung to a profit in October-December even as credit markets soured for funds, sources earlier told Reuters.

Search Gains on Social Media in Share of Online Video Referrals
Hitwise is reporting data showing that search and social media are virtually equal when it comes to the share of referrals to online video.
In the week ending April 12, 2008, the share of search referrals were up 35% year-over-year, while the share of social media referrals was down by 20%.
Within search referrals, Google’s share increased by 44% and Yahoo’s increased by 13%. Within social media referrals, the share of MySpace.com referrals declined by 25%.
The increase in search referrals is likely attributed to universal and blended search.
Still, online videos are gaining in popularity.

Novell: ‘The Standalone OS is Dead’
Autor admin | 17.04.2008 | Category SEO
The future of the standalone operating system is not particularly bright. At least, that’s according to Nat Friedman, chief technology and strategy officer for open source at Novell, which yesterday officially announced the company’s entry into the Linux appliance space.
Novell’s effort, the SUSE Appliance Program, aims to provide independent software vendors (ISVs) with an appliance-friendly version of Novell’s SUSE Linux, so they can create integrated software appliances.
The move follows similar pushes by rPath Linux and Red Hat to deliver software appliances based on Linux, angling for a share of a market that IDC predicts could be worth as much as $700 million by 2011.

Google Ad Outsourcing Deal Closer For Yahoo
Autor admin | 17.04.2008 | Category SEO
Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) is looking to turn over Web search advertising to Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) following a successful test using Google’s service to deliver ads alongside its Web search results, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.
Spokesmen for Google and Yahoo declined to comment.
The possible partnership with Google would be part of an a bid by Yahoo to forge a three-way deal in which Yahoo would merge with Time Warner’s (NYSE: TWX) AOL in return for Time Warner taking a stake in Yahoo, sources had told Reuters last week.
The move by Yahoo to outsource Web search advertising to market leader Google would allow Yahoo to focus on its online brand advertising business, where it has a stronger position.

Deduplication Gets More Face Time
Autor admin | 17.04.2008 | Category SEO
Deduplication is being pushed front-and-center in enterprise storage by yet another vendor that claims the technology’s potential benefits shouldn’t be limited to backend, offline storage.
Not everyone agrees that deduplication — that is, the process of scouring data archives to remove redundant information and shrink files — is ready for a larger role in critical online storage. To date, most deduplication solutions have focused on the realm of data backup.
But two-year-old Ocarina Networks contends that “de-dupe” can help to cut costs and space requirements in online, primary data environments. Meanwhile, it believes security and file retrieval speeds won’t be concerns when good policy management is put in place.

Yahoo’s Test of Google Ads is Successful, Partnership Progresses
Yahoo’s two week test of Google’s search advertising has proved successful, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing “people familiar with the matter.” As a result, a partnership between the two search engines is increasingly likely.
Earlier this week, SearchIgnite released data that Yahoo made gains on Google in the search advertising game. But Yahoo has a long way to go in making significant strides in the search ad game, and they have more immediate issues at hand, namely Microsoft’s unsolicited bid to acquire the company.
A partnership with Google appears to be one of many moves in what appears to be an attempt by Yahoo to fend off Microsoft in its unsolicited bid for the company or to raise the offer.

Search Engine Promises to Reduce Carbon Footprint
If you want to “go green” while conducting your searches, then a new search engine is right up your alley. Echocho promises to grow up to 2 trees for every 1000 searches. The search engine allows users to choose whether they wish to conduct searches on Yahoo or Google.
As of this post, Ecocho had planted 2,873 trees which they say offsets 1,436,710 kilos of C2. The trees are purchased using 70 percent of advertising revenue. Echocho also has a toolbar which is available to download for Firefox or IE6 and IE7.
The design of Echocho features a white background, which may prove controversial for some eco-evangelists.

Don’t Play Lifeguard in the Social Community Pool
Autor admin | 17.04.2008 | Category SEO

While some may secretly harbor the dream of being the next David Hasselhoff (present company excluded), it’s important to not act on that dream and be the corporate lifeguard in your social community. “The Hoff” aside, we should all learn from the mistakes the music industry made and continues to make with regard to their customers. We don’t want to go down the same lane twice. The music industry didn’t first seek to understand the huge benefits of digital music when it first arrived (no more physical inventory, shipping, store theft, real-time feedback, trackability, etc.). Instead, the music industry immediately focused on the negative effects of piracy. (Read the full post about ‘Don’t Play Lifeguard in the Social Community Pool’…)
AMD Scores Big With OEMs on Barcelona
Autor admin | 17.04.2008 | Category SEO
Now that AMD (NYSE: AMD) has gotten its troubles behind it and is producing its Quad Core Opteron in large volumes, tier 1 OEMs are lining up to announce hardware systems supporting the long-delayed processor line.
The Quad Core Opteron, a.k.a. Barcelona, had been plagued by development delays and was several months late. Just as it was ready to ship, it discovered a bug called “errata” that could cause certain memory-related errors under certain conditions. This delayed the new Opterons by another six months.
Perhaps the best news for AMD is that not only did OEMs stay with the chipmaker through its lengthy delays, they will expand their offerings.
