Digging deeper into the social press release

First of all, a tip of the cap to Drew Kerr over at Four Corners Communications for emailing me about a new post by Mark Glaser on the MediaShift weblog at PBS, which is entitled, “The Social Press Release: Multimedia, Two-Way, Direct to the Public.”

Mark interviews Laura Sturaitis, senior vice president of media services & product strategy for Business Wire, Andy Beal, a marketing consultant who writes the Marketing Pilgrim blog, and others about the evolution of press releases.

Mark also includes links to a number of articles on the topic, including: Is the Social Media Press Release a Meatball Sundae?

Cisco Buys Nuova as FCoE Heats Up

Autor admin | 10.04.2008 | Category SEO

In a play on converged data center networks and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), Cisco is buying the 20 percent of Nuova Systems it doesn’t already own (see Cisco, Brocade See One Big Happy Fabric).

At this week’s Storage Networking World conference in Orlando, Fla., Cisco also unveiled the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series, a product first developed by Nuova. The 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch offers unified fabric capabilities and support for multiple data center networking protocols and software intelligence, including FCoE, lossless Data Center Ethernet and iSCSI.

Nuova had operated as a majority-owned subsidiary of Cisco after the networking giant invested $70 million for 80 percent of the company between August 2006 and April 2007.

Microsoft to Fight Search Spam by Analyzing Email

Microsoft to Fight Search Spam by Analyzing Email

Here’s a story I missed when it broke. On March 25, Microsoft was awarded a patent it applied for nearly 4 years ago, to fight search spam based on external elements, like “electronic documents,” or email. The prevailing theory is that similar indicators will show up in spammy emails and spammy blog comments and other SEO spam.

Given the resurgence of spam from SEO companies, Microsoft may also want to use the spam filters built into Outlook to highlight potential SEO spammers, working on the theory that spammers are spammers, in any and all fields.

Marjority of U.S. Adults Uncomfortable About Search Engine Data Collection

Majority of U.S. Adults Uncomfortable About Search Engine Data Collection

A majority of U.S. adults are uncomfortable about search engine data collection practices, according to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive. 59% are uneasy about the ads that are based on search behavior.

Search engines maintain that the targeted ads help them keep services free, and introducing that concept to survey participants did seem to alter the majority opinion. In light of that information, a 55% majority said it was ok after all to have those ads based on collected user data.

But that doesn’t mean searchers don’t retain some reservation.

Link Building Strategies: Apprentice Edition

Autor admin | 10.04.2008 | Category SEO

In my last article, I outlined seven basic steps to create a link building campaign. In response to my article, Arnie Kuenn from Vertical Measures wrote: “I think #6 [Create a Schedule] might be the most important point. I’d say 99 percent of the people who know they need to do link building just don’t schedule the time or commit to the effort.”

This hit home to me. Let me tell you my woes:

  1. I run a Web marketing firm.
  2. I just started a new division focused on training and education at my firm.
  3. I write this article every other week.
  4. I create and produce more than seven videos a week.
  5. I’m constantly scouring the Web marketing news world for the latest news.
  6. I speak fairly often.

Bringing the SEO Teacher to You

Autor admin | 10.04.2008 | Category SEO

An old Buddhist proverb says, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” This holds true for SEO training as well, but in today’s business world, you may have to pay for the teacher’s plane ticket to get him or her there within a reasonable amount of time.

When it comes to finding SEO training, we’ve covered searching out the teacher for yourself whether in book form, a seminar or workshop, or digging through the basics on your own. But what about convenience? What about ordering out for training? What about bringing the teacher to you?

The Basics

If you decide to receive training in the comfort and convenience of your own turf, consider the following questions:

  • How many people do you want to train?

What Limits For Warrantless Wiretapping?

Autor admin | 10.04.2008 | Category SEO

SAN FRANCISCO — Telephone companies are sitting on a potential diamond mine of information. The Bush administration is locked in a struggle with Congress about the rules for mining the data. Once again, technology has leapfrogged regulation. And once again, the battle lines are drawn around ideological positions.

A panel discussion at the RSA security conference, held in San Francisco this week, illuminated the divide between those who want to take full advantage of data mining technology and those who think the courts should help safeguard the privacy of U.S. citizens.

An Imperfect (Cyber) Storm

Autor admin | 10.04.2008 | Category SEO

SAN FRANCISCO — Say a highly organized, international group of anti-globalization organizations coordinated a protest attack on the network infrastructure of the United States. Maybe disgruntled individuals and opportunistic hackers quickly launched their own attacks when they saw what was going on.

If a systems glitch could black out the entire northwest in 2003, what kind of damage could such a concerted assault produce?

You might say that the biggest question is why hasn’t it happened yet?

The federal government has been working with private companies and security vendors to develop protocols and communications systems that will let them respond quickly and share relevant information on threats and attacks.

Autor admin | 10.04.2008 | Category SEO

Symantec Corp, the world’s biggest security software maker, said on Wednesday it will buy AppStream, a developer of technology used to distribute computer programs across large networks.

Financial terms were not immediately available.

AppStream’s investors include Draper Fisher Jurvetson, JK&B Capital, Goldman Sachs and Evergreen Partners, according to the privately held company’s Web site.

Its technology helps companies distribute software across large networks, and helps administrators monitor usage of software, according to the Web site.

The two companies have been business partners since 2006 and expect the acquisition to close by the end of June, said Symantec spokeswoman Yunsun Wee.

Adobe Launches Media Player, Video Site

Autor admin | 10.04.2008 | Category SEO

Better late than never. Adobe today announced its entry into the streaming media market with the launch of its Media Player and Adobe TV, a free online video resource to host videos for the Media Player.

In beta for some months on the Adobe Labs page, Adobe Media Player 1.0 is an AIR-based application, which makes it a cross-platform application and thus available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

That’s a plus over Microsoft’s Windows Media Player and RealNetworks’ Real player, both of which are Windows only, but it also has a shortcoming in the number of formats it supports; FLV files, which are Flash video files, or H.264-endcoded MPEG-4 files, and that’s it.
