IBM Readies Second Life For Enterprise
Autor admin | 04.04.2008 | Category SEO
IBM said on Wednesday it would become the first company to host private regions of the virtual world Second Life on its own computer servers.
The project is in testing and will go live within several weeks. It marks a new focus by Second Life’s parent company, Linden Lab, on providing software and services to corporate customers who want to use the virtual world for collaboration and teleconferencing.
IBM employees will be able to move freely between the public areas of Second Life and private areas, which are hosted behind IBM’s corporate firewall.
This will enable the company to have sensitive discussions and disclose proprietary information without having the data pass through the servers of privately held Linden Lab.

SEW Experts: Leveraging Traditional Media Placements in an Online World
Online media and Internet-based search continue to grow at the expense of their offline counterparts, newspapers and magazines. Because media placement options are continuously growing, smart local marketers need to leverage this major transformation of how people consume media in some creative ways. In today’s Vertical Search column, “Leveraging Traditional Media Placements in an Online World,” local search expert Gregg Stewart explains that fragmenting media options will continue to force smart marketers to stitch together sales opportunities from an ever-increasing number of sources.
Yahoo’s Mobile Search, Take Two
Autor admin | 04.04.2008 | Category SEO
Yahoo is living up to claims it’s going about business as usual, despite the uncertainty of Microsoft’s controversial buyout offer. At this week’s big CTIA Wireless show, Yahoo announced version 2.0 of its oneSearch mobile search service and enhancements designed to improve search on mobile devices.
The stakes in the burgeoning mobile market are huge. For example, mobile advertising revenue was $347 million in the U.S. in 2007, according to IDC estimates. But the research firm forecast that total could grow to $4 billion by 2011 and there is not yet a dominant player as Yahoo rival Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is in desktop search.

Do You Know Where That USB Drive Has Been?
Autor admin | 04.04.2008 | Category SEO
The latest trick from malware (define) writers is a retro form of virus propagation. For some time now, e-mail has been the standard form of delivery and spreading of malicious code by getting users to click on malicious links. But in the pre-Internet days, viruses typically spread from one computer to another via the floppy disks people used to share data and applications.
That old method is coming back, with a modern twist. Now the bad guys are targeting USB storage devices, most notably USB thumb drives, by taking advantage of the nature of the drive and a major weakness in Windows.
When a removable media like a thumb drive or CD-ROM are placed in a computer’s USB port or optical drive, respectively, a program can be automatically executed through the autorun.inf file.

Could an Appeal Derail OOXML?
Autor admin | 04.04.2008 | Category SEO
As expected, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) officially announced on Wednesday that Office Open XML (OOXML) has received enough votes to become a ISO standard.
Well, not quite.
Technically, OOXML has met all the criteria to be awarded ISO certification as a co-document format standard with OpenDocument Format (ODF). But there’s a possible catch.
“Subject to there being no formal appeals from ISO/IEC national bodies in the next two months, the International Standard will accordingly proceed to publication,” an ISO statement, released Wednesday morning Geneva time, said. That could be a big catch.
iPhone Shortage: Supply Woes or New Model?
Autor admin | 04.04.2008 | Category SEO
Apple’s iPhone is in short supply at many of its U.S. stores, which could indicate a component shortage or a clearing of shelves for a new model, analysts said on Wednesday.
Bernstein Research said its iPhone supply checks showed that the multifunction device appeared to be out of stock at Apple’s U.S. stores and its online store, which could lead to lost sales of up to 40,000 units a week in the event of a prolonged shortage.
Sacconaghi said the impact so far was limited, estimating the average Apple store was out of stock for only a few days during the March quarter, and that supplies appeared to be fine at stores of wireless carrier partner AT&T Inc.

Recent Google Updates Have SEOs Scrambling
Like a celebrity sitting down with Barbara Walters, Google News has decided to clear up rumors surrounding how articles are included and ranked. In a post on the official Google News blog, software engineer Andy Golding addressed some assumptions floating around about how articles are indexed.
Here are the Myths:
* Having an image next to your article improves your ranking
* Timing the publication of your article improves your article ranking
* There’s no way to see why my articles weren’t included in Google News
* Publishing a sitemap helps my rankings
* If I put AdSense on my site, my article rankings will improve
And now the Truths:
* Redesigning my site may affect my coverage in Google News
* Articles that are just images or video won’t be included
* Updating an article after posting it will create problems with Google News
Things to keep in mind:
* Google News only visits each URL once.

RIM Rocks, But Micron Misses
Autor admin | 04.04.2008 | Category SEO
Apple’s iPhone has yet to have much of an effect on Research In Motion, if the company’s latest quarterly results are any indication.
RIM reported better than expected quarterly results and guidance late Wednesday, and its subscriber growth was pretty impressive too.
RIM’s earnings of $412.5 million, or 72 cents a share, more than doubled from the year-ago quarter and were two cents better than Wall Street analysts expected, and revenues of $1.88 billion were up 102% and also ahead of forecasts.
Google LookingTo Kill Affiliate Marketing?

Google LookingTo Kill Affiliate Marketing?
Okay we know that Google is divesting itself of Performics…. well the search arm anyway. They are keeping the affiliate marketing arm.
Google had started their version of affiliate marketing some time ago with their CPA ads. Sign up through AdSense and you could use the creatives and get paid on conversions, while advertisers could offer amounts for conversions and Google tracked to see if it was a better financial deal for them…. this has not taken off.
But grabbing experienced affiliate marketing consultants could turn this into the hope they once saw in it.
Unfortunately it is a move similar to the push into analytics and ad serving - if it works Google will provide some serious competition to all other affiliate programs.
