Trash Hauler Sues SAP Over Software Failure

Autor admin | 27.03.2008 | Category SEO

Waste Management (NYSE: WMI) said it spent more than $100 million on a computer system that was supposed to help it save money, but instead turned out to be a “complete failure.”

Waste Management spokeswoman Lynn Brown said on Wednesday that her company sued SAP (NYSE: SAP), the German-based company that sold it the system, seeking all its expenses plus punitive damages.

The No. 1 U.S. trash hauler, which reported $309 million in fourth-quarter net income, has yet to determine whether it will take a charge for its investment in the failed system.

“It depends on what SAP’s response is to the lawsuit,” Brown said in an email.

CNET to Restructure, Cut 10 Percent of Workforce

Autor admin | 27.03.2008 | Category SEO

Online media company CNET Networks (NASDAQ: CNET) said on Wednesday it will eliminate 120 jobs, or about 10 percent of its staff, in a restructuring to help it focus on long-term growth amid complaints from some investors.

CNET expected pretax restructuring charges from the job cuts to run between $3.5 million and $4 million, most of which will be taken in the first quarter of 2008.

The job cuts are effective immediately.

The moves come after hedge fund Jana Partners LLC won a key court ruling earlier this month that could help it take control of CNET’s board.

Google Ad Clicks Up, Down and Flat in Feb., Depending on Who You Ask

According to today’s headlines, clicks on Google ads are dropping, flattening and experiencing a slowdown in growth - all at the same time! New comScore data is being reported and there are more angles on the numbers than there are flavors at Baskin Robbins. So who’s right? Everyone is, to a point.

Here’s the reported data:

* February 2008 clicks are up 3% to 515 million over February 2007
* February 2008 clicks are down 3% from January 2008.
* January 2008 clicks were down 7.5% from December 2007.

I contacted comScore’s Andrew Lipsman for more details and to ask him if these declines were seasonal as opposed to sensational:

“We do not publicly release our paid click data, it is sent exclusively to clients.

Czechs Support OOXML — Will Others?

Autor admin | 27.03.2008 | Category SEO

Chalk up another one for Microsoft. Four more to go.

The Czech Republic’s delegation to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has decided to reverse its vote from September and will instead vote to approve Microsoft’s Office Open XML (OOXML) as a standard.

Now, all that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) the and European standards group Ecma International have left to do is garner four more national delegations to change their votes from “Disapprove” to “Approve.” The deadline for that is this weekend.

At the same time, the rift between critics and supporters couldn’t get any wider, and a flurry of heated language continues to fly back and forth across the blogosphere over the vote, the standard and, Microsoft.

Google Continues Paid Links Crusade

Google Continues Paid Links Crusade

According to Dave Naylor, the punishments Google is handing down for paid links appear to be retroactive. On his blog, Naylor outlines the case of a site that was recently penalized for selling paid links more than six months ago. According to Indigo Clothing’s founder Alex Walker, the site had sold links in the past, but had removed them from its site about six months ago. The site was recently penalized by Google, and Matt Cutts indicated to Naylor that the cause was likely past sales of paid links.

While sites have been penalized for actively selling links, this case appears to be different.

Read Any Good SEO Books Lately? Try These

Autor admin | 27.03.2008 | Category SEO

Some of my readers have asked what books are available for learning everything there is to know about SEM (define). Unfortunately, I have to tell them that there’s no such thing. Many search marketing books will offer some good insights and tips, but you’re really going to learn the most by getting out there and doing.

Still, there are several books out there that can help further your understanding of search marketing in general, or do a deep dive on a specific sub-topic. Several years ago, you would only find books focusing on just a general topic, such as SEO or PPC (define). Now there are books that cover everything from Web analytics to landing page optimization and beyond.

Google Launches YouTube Insight - Google Analytics Lite
Google Launches YouTube Insight - Google Analytics Lite Today Google video search engine YouTube launched a free Web analytics tool. Think Google Analytics Lite: it’s essentially a way to see how popular a video is over time combined with a global map that shows where it’s popular. The map? It’s identical to Google Analytics. Hmmm, wonder if it will ever be integrated into the Google Analytics platform? Google announced the tool in a blog post after midnight EDT stating Insight enables anyone with a YouTube account to view “detailed statistics” about the videos they upload. So what insights will YouTube Insight provide? 1. how often a video’s viewed in different geographic regions 2. (Read the full post about ‘Google Launches YouTube Insight - Google Analytics Lite’…)

Creating a Link Building System

Autor admin | 27.03.2008 | Category SEO

Last week, I moderated the Beyond Linkbait: Getting Authoritative Online Mentions panel at Search Engine Strategies New York. The panel was filled with great information from Chris Boggs, Sally Falkow, and Lee Odden.

Everyone has those “a-ha!” moments at these events. For me, that moment was when I asked the audience who was implementing link building campaigns. Less than 50 percent of the people in the audience raised their hands.

During another sessions last week at SES, I heard that there are about 15 million small businesses in the U.S. Of those, 1 million are online. I can’t give you the source of those numbers, but it sounds reasonable to me.

Laying the Groundwork for OS Systems Management

Autor admin | 27.03.2008 | Category SEO

The systems management space has been dominated by proprietary vendors like IBM Tivoli and HP OpenView for years, though in recent years open source upstarts are trying to make a dent. Among those upstarts are GroundWork and Hyperic, both of whom are out this week with new product releases.

For GroundWork, the new release is GroundWork Monitor 5.2 as well as a new Enterprise Edition that can scale to up to 10,000 servers. The Enterprise Edition complements GroundWork’s existing Professional and Community Editions.

GroundWork Monitor first took the stage nearly two years ago as an integrated suite of open source systems management tools, including the popular Nagios network monitoring tool.
