Maybe Google’s Not Becoming a Portal?

Last week at SES NY, new comScore data on universal search showed that Google was sending more traffic to its own properties than it had been in the past. That led some people (including me) to wonder if that meant Google was becoming more like a portal than a search engine.

But that data appears to miss the larger picture, where Google is sending even more traffic to news sites than it does to Google News. In today’s SearchDay, “Is Google Not So Portal-Like After All?,” Greg Jarboe digs into the subject, and finds some surprising results.

Good to be Google, Apex Aviation and Pilot Eric Schmidt
Good to be Google, Apex Aviation and Pilot Eric Schmidt It’s good to be Google, CEO/Pilot Eric Schmidt and Apex Aviation. Big-spending AdWords advertiser and vertical search engine Virgin Charter? Not so much. Apex gets the Google gold. Eric Schmidt has the use of a corporate jet that he makes available from time to time to Apex Aviation Corporation for charters by Apex to its customers. This aircraft has been chartered by Google from time to time and made available to certain Google executive officers for time-critical business trips. In 2007 Google paid Apex $7,000 per hour for use of this aircraft. (Read the full post about ‘Good to be Google, Apex Aviation and Pilot Eric Schmidt’…)

Will Motorola Split Reverse Decline?

Autor admin | 26.03.2008 | Category SEO

Motorola today said it plans to split its core mobile devices and broadband businesses into two publicly-owned companies, a move it hopes will provide the “clarity of direction” needed to get the No. 3 handset maker on the road to recovery.

“This will provide improved flexibility, increased management focus and pave the way for us to regain leadership,” CEO Greg Brown told investors during a live Web cast before the stock markets opened.

He added that the strategy, slated for completion by 2009, would foster development of “compelling products” by the mobile division — a move to counter Motorola’s (NYSE: MOT) slipping fortunes in handsets.

Chip Sales Slower But Still Strong in ‘08

Autor admin | 26.03.2008 | Category SEO

This year will not match 2007 in terms of sales or growth, but it will still be an up year in the semiconductor business. That’s the conclusion of a report from In-Stat, which places revenue growth for 2008 at just 2.4 percent, with stronger sectors offsetting weaker ones.

The consumer segment will be the strongest in 2008, with growth at 5.9 percent, despite a credit crunch and the housing market taking a pounding. Jim McGregor, In-Stat research director and principal analyst for semiconductors, said consumers still want their gadgets.

“Consumers are two-thirds of the [semiconductor] economy and the ones driving it, and they are still spending,” he told InternetNews.com.

Searchers Beginning to See Google Video Ads in Sponsored Listings

Searchers Beginning to See Google Video Ads in Sponsored Listings
Searchers Beginning to See Google Video Ads in Sponsored Listings If you look carefully in your next Google search, you might just see a video ad included in the sponsored listings along side your organic results. It’s not obvious at first. You have to look for a version of the PlusBox, used for things like local search results and video in the organic listings, in the ads column. In February, word came that Google was testing video ads, and searchers began noticing the ads on live searches this morning. I did a search today for [smart phone] (since [smartphone] didn’t return a video), and found an ad with an invitation to “Watch Commercial” under it: When you click on the plus sign, the listing expands to display a video right there in the results. Cable Companies Discuss Funding Wireless Venture

Autor admin | 26.03.2008 | Category SEO

Comcast and Time Warner Cable, the two largest U.S. cable operators, are discussing a plan to fund a new wireless company that would be run by Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) and Clearwire (NASDAQ: CLWR), people familiar with the discussions said on Tuesday.

Comcast is expected to contribute as much as $1 billion for the wireless venture, which would use emerging WiMAX technology for the nationwide venture, said the sources, who were familiar with the deal but not authorized to speak to the media about it.

WiMAX is a largely unproven technology that promises to support Internet access at speeds up to five times faster than traditional wireless networks, and can support a range of mobile and video applications.

New SEOmoz Report Features Data from 3,000+ SEOs

Search engine marketers are getting more sophisticated, still don’t trust search engines, and keep spending on PPC. Those are some of the findings in a new SEO Industry Survey from SEOmoz.

Seattle-based SEOmoz has released findings from their SEO Industry Survey. The survey was conducted in February 2008 and includes answers from over 3,000 search engine marketing professionals from all over the world.

According to SEOmoz, the biggest takeaways are:

  • The vast majority of respondents from SEM agencies use tools to aid their marketing efforts.
  • Marketers are still unsure about things like the potential of negative effects from registering with Webmaster Central, or the use of nofollow.
  • From the 2,060 people responding, we see at least $73 million is spent on PPC a month.

Search Within a Search: Where’s it Leading?

Autor admin | 26.03.2008 | Category SEO

The American economy could be better. Historically, economic downturns force bizarre changes in otherwise healthy businesses as companies try to calm nervous investors panicked by our fear-mongering media.

Whether motivated by fear, or just a drive to create a better product, we’ve witnessed several interesting changes in the search world. One day Ask is becoming a search destination for women, the next it isn’t. A single report from comScore was twisted eight ways from Sunday in a feigned attempt to prove that search was taking a nosedive.

As is often the case with misinterpreting data or looking for answers where they don’t exist, the real story behind change is probably far more interesting than the headlines.

Oracle Expands Its Linux Base

Autor admin | 26.03.2008 | Category SEO

So how is Oracle doing with its Oracle Unbreakable Linux? Pretty well. According to Monica Kumar, senior director Linux and open source product marketing at Oracle, there are now 2,000 customers for Oracle’s Linux. Those customers will now be getting a bonus from Oracle: free clustering software.

Oracle’s Clusterware software previously had only been available to Oracle’s Real Application Clusters (RAC) customers, but now will also be part of the Unbreakable Linux support offering at no additional cost.

Clusterware is the core Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) software offering that enables the grouping of individual servers together into a cluster system.
