Jason Calacanis TechCrunched in Techmeme: Deathmatch at SES New York
Jason Calacanis TechCrunched in Techmeme: Deathmatch at SES New York Jason Calacanis has owned the front page of Techmeme–the world’s most influential technology and Web 2.0 news aggregator–for the past 18 hours and counting. Another Civil War in Silicon Valley? Well, it’s war anyway–even if not civil. Aussie Duncan Riley of TechCrunch fame bodyslammed Jason after his Calacanis.com post on how to run a startup. Duncan said “Calacanis Fires People Who Have A Life.” So far, 164 comments on TechCrunch about firing anyone who’s not a workaholic … Jason got up off the canvas, charged his opponent Valleywagged, and parried Duncan’s jabs by updating his post, How to save money running a startup by revising his VC deathmatch coda. Autor admin | 08.03.2008 | Category SEO

STANFORD, Calif. – What role does the federal government have in the network neutrality (define) debate? Where are things at with the 700 MHz wireless spectrum auction? Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin addressed these and other issues today at an event here at the Stanford Law School.

The FCC has been on something of an outreach campaign of late that included a public hearing at Harvard last month that also focused on telecommunications and network management issues. In his remarks today, Martin specifically said he wants to finish the FCC’s consideration of complaints related to network management issues by the first half of this year.

Muni Wi-Fi’s Second Chance

Autor admin | 08.03.2008 | Category SEO

Four years ago, municipal Wi-Fi rode in on a great wave of promise: free Internet for all residents! It offered a utopian vision of whole cities becoming hotspots where people could surf the Web from a park bench, closing the digital divide in the process.

That promise has gone largely unfulfilled. After signing Internet companies to big contracts to blanket their cities with access points to create mesh networks, municipal governments have since experienced a severe case of buyer’s remorse.

The problem was that they set out with the wrong business model, explains Stan Schatt, vice president of ABI Research and lead author of a new report projecting a 60-fold increase in government-funded Wi-Fi coverage over the next four years.

Do Workers Shun The Help Desk?

Autor admin | 08.03.2008 | Category SEO

Savvy office workers frustrated that their on-the-job computer tools don’t function as smoothly as, say, an Apple iPod are taking matters into their own hands.

No longer are they relying on company technicians or information technology (IT) administrators to choose the software needed to get the job done. They know how to pluck tools right off the Web.

Industry observers use the term “consumerization” to describe the phenomenon whereby office workers are less likely to wait for the IT folks to equip them.

How to Go Beyond Linkbait : SES NYC

SES NYC is fast approaching. My session with Chris Boggs and Lee Odden titled Beyond Linkbait will cover some interesting ideas.

I spoke to Chris today to get his take on the idea of going beyond linkbait.

One topic he’s covering is reciprocal links - good or bad? If done properly, they can still be a good SEO tactic, says Chris. They need to happen naturally and be relevant. He has some great ideas on how to make these links work for SEO and offers examples of what a bad reciprocal link and a good reciprocal link would be.

Chris plans to share a case study about creating content for YouTube or other social media sites that is not intended to produce links directly.

Sun Plans JVM Port to The iPhone

Autor admin | 08.03.2008 | Category SEO

After a 24-hour blitz through the Apple iPhone SDK, Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) has declared it can use the SDK to get its Java Virtual Machine (JVM) ported over to Apple’s phone, as well as the iPod Touch, since the two are virtually the same technology.

Sun’s JVM is already on the Mac OS, which is used in the iPhone and iPod Touch. Sun won’t be able to ship a final JVM until Apple releases the final version of the SDK, which is expected to be around June. It will be a free update for iPhones, but iPod Touch users will have to pay for it.

Due to accounting regulations, Apple is forced to charge for software updates to the Touch because accounting rules say if you upgrade a device that’s not on a subscription, you have to charge.
