EMC Helps Banish Babe Ruth’s Ghost

It’s probably a bit of a stretch to give the storage industry credit for helping end the Curse of the Bambino, but data storage technology did provide a critical boost at the right moment.
In game four of the 2004 American League Championship Series, with the Boston Red Sox trailing the archrival New York Yankees three games to none, Red Sox pinch runner Dave Roberts sat in the clubhouse, studying videos of Yankees closer Mariano Rivera pitching from the stretch with a man on first.
Two innings later, in the bottom of the ninth with the Red Sox trailing by a run, Roberts stole second off Rivera and went on to score the tying run.

Top U.S. phone company AT&T (NYSE:T) will invest $1 billion worldwide this year to build four undersea cables and to expand its network services, senior officials said on Wednesday.
The bulk of this investment will be outside the United States, where AT&T in 2007 spent $750 million of its total investment of about $18 billion, Greg Brutus, a spokesman for AT&T in the Asia Pacific region, said.
The undersea cables will be to Japan and the rest of Asia, AT&T India Chairman V.S. Gopi Gopinath said at a media roundtable.
AT&T would also build nodes or switches to route network traffic in Europe, Asia and the United States.

AOL Opens AIM for Open Source
Autor admin | 05.03.2008 | Category SEO
For the last two years, AOL has been promoting its OpenAIM initiative as a vehicle to enable developers to build their own AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)-based clients. But there were issues with documentation that got in the way of some projects.
With the release of Open AIM 2.0 today, AOL is aiming AIM at open source developers with more ease-of-use tools.
Among the major changes in Open AIM 2.0 is the fact that AOL is now providing open documentation on its core OSCAR protocol (Open System for CommunicAtion in Realtime), which powers AIM. Previously, open source instant messaging client implementations of OSCAR had to reverse-engineer the protocol instead of simply using a documented protocol.
Facebook in Talks With Major Music Labels: Report
Autor admin | 05.03.2008 | Category SEO
Social networking site Facebook has approached major music labels about launching a music service, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The talks were described as “preliminary.”
The development comes after sources familiar with the discussion told Reuters last week that the major labels had held similar talks with MySpace, the leading social networking site owned by News Corp. (NYSE: NWS).
Privately held Facebook and the four major music companies — Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI Group — were not immediately available for comment.
Yahoo Buys Some Breathing Room

NEW YORK — Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) extended its deadline to nominate board directors, gaining time to seek alternatives or negotiate friendlier terms to a $41.7 billion buyout offer from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT).
The original March 14 deadline could have catapulted Microsoft and Yahoo into a proxy contest next week. Instead, Yahoo said today that the deadline would fall 10 days after it announces the date for its annual shareholder meeting, which has yet to be scheduled.
Yahoo has explored tie-ups with several other Internet and media companies that would allow it to retain more independence. Talks about a deal with Time Warner Inc.’s AOL division have accelerated, a person briefed on the discussions said on Wednesday.

Yahoo Fires Back

Yahoo Fires Back
Yahoo retaliated in the ongoing saga of Microsoft’s hostile takeover attempt today by extending the deadline for nominations of its board of directors to some future date 10 days after it announces the date of its annual meeting.
Yahoo is taking its time making that decision, since if there’s no annual meeting, there can be no vote by shareholders, bolstered by Microsoft, to replace Yahoo’s existing board with a more Microsoft-friendly one. By postponing the possible house-cleaning of the current board, Yahoo also makes it more likely that it can reach a peaceful accord with Microsoft on an acquisition, or find another suitor willing to step in.
The plan could backfire on Yahoo if shareholders see this move as disenfranchising them from the decision to accept Microsoft’s offer.

The Beginning of the End? Or the End of the Beginning?
Autor admin | 05.03.2008 | Category SEO
The data doesn’t lie; unless you torture it and force a false confession. The latest barrage of “be afraid” and “see I told you” press surrounding Google and its less than satisfactory CTRs had me (like many in the search business) staring sideways at the data – and more importantly the conclusions drawn.
How could people be clicking less? Was the entire Internet ad business coming to a screeching halt? Shortly after the news began breaking in major media, I began discussions with folks at comScore (since they released the data) while running down possible scenarios and thinking about the errors in judgment made by major media.
In the end, searches are still up; search revenues are still strong; and the sky isn’t falling.

Google: The Spy Who Loved Me Dr. Hal Varian, Google’s chief economist and occasional Freakonomics Blog guest blogger, posted “Why data matters” on the official Google blog, cross-posted on the Google Public Policy Blog. Varian explains that Web search algorithms are improved by the “wisdom of the crowds” drawn from the “logs of billions of previous search queries.” That makes the general public - and government officials - nervous about privacy. Varian tutors us in PageRank simplified and discusses link building in an ideal world - one where The New York Times and The Wall St. (Read the full post about ‘Google: The Spy Who Loved Me’…)

Load Time Impacts Google Quality Score
A member over at WebmasterWorld found that web page load time is now a factor in Google’s Qulaity Score for AdWords.
This was started last month and may be the one thing people have been overlooking when examining what impacts their QS numbers.
The big question is does Google set a table or range or is this fastest to slowest for ranking impact?
Discussion of this has been started at the SEW Forums as well.
