Baidu Search Engine Launches IM in Beta - Baidu Hi
Baidu Search Engine Launches IM in Beta - Baidu Hi Search engine Baidu has launched instant messaging (IM) in beta, the first formal foray into the Chinese IM market. The “Baidu Hi” service won’t be expected to generate revenue in the short term. But the Chinese search titan must find a way to diversify its revenue base. The Chinese language search engine recently launched a Japanese portal. Baidu, China’s most popular search engine, has more than 60 percent of the search engine industry revenues, according to Analysys International, a Beijing-based research firm. Google China holds second place with about 26 percent share. Yahoo China site remains in third with a little less than 10 percent share. Judge Strikes Down Wikileaks Injunction

Autor admin | 01.03.2008 | Category SEO

A federal judge today struck down an injunction against Wikileaks, reversing his earlier ruling that effectively blocked access to the muckraking site through its U.S. domain name in a lawsuit brought by a Swiss bank.

The ruling erases all domain-name restrictions against Wikileaks, the site created for anonymous whistleblowers to post documents detailing corporate improprieties or government misconduct.

Earlier this month, Julius Baer Bank and Trust brought a suit against Wikileaks and its domain registrar, Dynadot, claiming that the site had posted fraudulent documents that revealed personal information about customers of its Cayman Islands subsidiary.

How Fake is Your PC?

Autor admin | 01.03.2008 | Category SEO

Personal computers are getting faker. The percentage of counterfeit components is growing steadily, if unevenly. Fake components make PCs cheaper. The downside is declining reliability, safety and performance. Is it even possible to keep it real?

A massive crackdown at U.S. and European airports during two weeks in December yielded some 360,000 fake electronic components worth $1.3 billion, including phony Intel chips and about 40 other major brands. The raids were announced last Friday.

Such high-visibility busts mask the difficulty in stopping counterfeit components.

OOXML Meeting Wraps Up — Who Won?

Autor admin | 01.03.2008 | Category SEO

Both sides in the Office Open XML (OOXML) debate claimed victory Friday as a key international standards body meeting called to help determine the file formats’ future wrapped up in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ironically, despite the two sides’ posturing, the meeting’s outcome does not directly determine whether OOXML becomes a ratified standard for document interchange or not. Instead, it starts the clock running for countries to change their votes – or not.

This week’s meeting was held to resolve issues raised last summer by voting nations when they voted down a bid by Microsoft and European standards body Ecma International to get OOXML certified as a standard by the granddaddy of standards groups — the Organization for International Standardization (ISO).

Mozilla to Apple: Show Your Hand

Autor admin | 01.03.2008 | Category SEO

A Mozilla developer, currently working on the 3.0 release of the browser, raised a ruckus when he expressed some frustration in a blog post yesterday over Apple’s lack of proper OS documentation.

Programmer Vladimir Vukicevic noted in his blog that once he discovered some undocumented APIs (define) in Mac OS X, performance for the Mac version of Firefox 3 took off like a shot. This led to what he termed an inaccurate claim on the community tech site Slashdot that Apple was crippling non-Apple applications.

Other members of the Slashdot community were quick to question the accuracy of the post. Still, Vukcevic wasn’t happy about the initial claim.

comScore: Google’s Ad Drop No Cause For Alarm

Autor admin | 01.03.2008 | Category SEO

After jangling investors’ nerves earlier this week with a report that Google’s paid clicks were declining, comScore today offered a detailed analysis of its figures, which may help calm a jittery Wall Street.

In a blog post, comScore CEO Magid Abraham and James Lamberti, senior vice president of media and search, attributed the drop-off to improvements Google had made to its ad platform — nothing that indicated a pervasive weakness in Google’s ad business.

“All indicators point to the company continuing to do very well as far as consumer usage and competitive position,” the authors wrote.

Earlier this week, shares of Google fell $43.61 (8.6 percent) largely on the report.

Would Ask be Ask?

Autor admin | 01.03.2008 | Category SEO

Would Ask be Ask?
Would Ask be Ask? If Ask dismantled its Teoma engine, would Ask still be Ask? The simple answer to this existential question is no. The Ask search is based on the concept of expert opinion, and there are many refinement options shown in the interface based on clustered or categorized results. So if Teoma were shut down, we think the ability to narrow or expand searches would likely disappear — as shown in the chocolate options here. On the other hand, it’s possible to port these algorithms elsewhere if there’s enough time for Ask engineers to prepare transitions. That means these search refinements could be layered on top of a different engine, albeit slowing down the response time. (Read the full post about ‘Would Ask be Ask?’…)
