TI Expands Application Chips Beyond Phones

Texas Instruments (TI) unveiled new application chips on Tuesday that can be used in everything from music players to medical equipment, with an aim to expand its business beyond the mobile phone chip market.

TI, which faces competition from San Diego-based Qualcomm in the wireless market, said it would address broader markets by expanding its OMAP product line, which is mostly used to support features such as gaming and video in handsets.

Riverbed Accelerates Acceleration Business

WAN acceleration vendor Riverbed is aiming to accelerate its acceleration business with the release of its Riverbed Optimization System (RiOS) version 5.0. RiOS is the core system that power’s Riverbed’s acceleration hardware.

The latest release improves acceleration for Oracle 11 databases, SSL encryption as well as Microsoft Exchange 2007. While Riverbed claims it has some unique features, others in the acceleration business beg to differ.

“The big new feature is the RiOS Services Platform which is a protected partition to run additional services and application on (Riverbed’s) Steelhead appliances,” Harold Byun, senior product marketing manager at Riverbed told InternetNews.com.

Big Blue Sends Stocks Into Overdrive

IBM shares surged on Tuesday, sending stocks to their best three-day gain of the year, after the company raised guidance and announced a $15 billion share buyback.

IBM shares jumped 4% after the company said it expects to earn at least $8.25 and as much as $8.35 a share this year. Wall Street analysts were looking for $8.22, according to Thomson Financial. The additional earnings per share will come as the company buys back as much as $12 billion worth of shares this year.

“IBM’s profitable growth and consistently strong cash flow enable the company to continue to return value to our shareholders,” CEO Samuel J.

Google Submarine Cable to Spike Internet Growth?

Web search company Google has agreed to build an undersea cable with five telecom operators that will link the United States to Japan and provide the capacity to sustain a surge in Internet traffic between the continents.

Google and the five telecom companies said in a joint statement that the 10,000-kilometer (6,200 mile) undersea fiber-optic cable, connecting the United States to Japan, will cost $300 million.

Jaxtr Gives VoIP Users Something to Talk About

MENLO PARK, Calif. – After a wildly successful beta launch in terms of user numbers, VoIP (define) provider Jaxtr launched its official 1.0 release today. During its 11-month beta period, Jaxtr said it attracted over 10 million users to its service.

A key element of the official launch is café jaxtr, a Web site where users of the phone service can find each other online and new people to talk to.

“When we launched Jaxtr last March, we said we’re a social communications company. We saw this as an emergent market,” Jaxtr CEO Konstantin Guericke told InternetNews.com at a briefing here at his company’s headquarters. Guericke has solid experience in social networks, as he is also a co-founder of LinkedIn.
