Novell Bids $205M For PlateSpin in Virtualization Push

Though virtualization deals with “virtual” bits, the business of virtualization is certainly real for Novell. Today Novell announced it will acquire PlateSpin, a maker of data center virtualization management products, for $205 million in cash.
Novell expects the deal to close by the end of its second fiscal quarter, which is April 30. The deal adds what Novell considers to be a missing piece to its data center virtualization management offerings.

Media Spend on Search, Verticals, Continues to Grow
Search made up 31 percent of the $735 million in media billings in 2007 by Microsoft-owned Avenue A | Razorfish, second only to ads on vertical sites at 39 percent of spending, according to Jeff Lanctot, senior VP of Global Media, who published details of the agency’s spending in the latest Digital Outlook Report. That’s up from search’s 28-percent share of billings in 2006.
Search, at $227.8 million, and verticals, at $286.6 million, were the big winners last year, while the agency’s media spending slowed in both portals, at $139.6 million, and ad networks, at $80.8 million.
Microsoft Gets Another Shot at Open XML Standard

Microsoft ramped up the fight to have its Office Open XML document format made into an international standard on Monday as delegates from 37 countries met to reconsider the proposal.
Their meeting hosted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in Geneva is meant to help broker consensus after a preliminary vote on the standard failed six months ago.
No balloting will occur during the weeklong talks, but the 87 national standards bodies who previously voted will have until March 29 to adjust their positions, giving the world’s largest software maker another shot at the two-thirds majority it needs for approval.

Kelsey Group Predicts Growth in Interactive, Directional Ads
Interactive advertising revenue in the U.S. will grow from $22.5 billion in 2007 to $62.4 billion by 2012, according to a new Kelsey Group report. Interactive advertising revenue, which Kelsey defines as search (including local search), display advertising, classifieds and other interactive ad products, grew its share of global advertising revenues from 6.1 percent in 2006 to 7.4 percent in 2007. By 2012, Kelsey Group analysts expect the interactive share of global ad spending will reach 21 percent.
“Growing from 7.1 percent to 21 percent is a lot. We’re saying that there will be a big shift to digital advertising markets,” Matt Booth, SVP interactive local media for Kelsey, told ClickZ News.

EMC Rolls Out Mainframe Virtual Tape Tool

In the past few months it seemed that small-to-medium enterprises were the new love interest for storage vendors. Everyone from IBM to Dell were courting SMB organizations. Now it seems some powerhouse players are also wooing the mainframe environment, bearing promises of more efficient storage resource management.
EMC is the second big player in the past week to announce product improvements as well as a new mainframe storage tool. The vendor released today an updated version of its data protection software, RecoverPoint 3.0, and the latest addition to its EMC Disk Library for Mainframe (EMC DLm) portfolio, the DLm4080.

MetaRAM Bets On High Capacity Memory Breakthrough

A Silicon Valley startup says it can deliver a 90 percent reduction in the cost of a decked out server by a breakthrough in memory technology.
MetaRAM, founded by Fred Weber, a former chief technology officer at AMD, is going public today with its MetaSDRAM. The technology doubles the memory on a memory stick by using cheaper memory components. The company doesn’t sell memory chips or sticks or have a fabrication plant. Instead, it makes an interface chip that does the real work.
Weber noted that as memory goes up in capacity, the price increase is not in parity with the memory increase. A quick check of memory prices on Pricewatch.com, which specializes in looking for hardware bargains online, bears this out.

Google AdWords Contextual Advertising Mystery Solved

My column on Google AdWords placement-targeted campaigns exposed a mystery: rejected AdSense publisher sites. This week: mystery solved — possibly doubling the number of sites upon which you can advertise.
I’ve been getting some interesting feedback and questions regarding my columns on Google’s AdWords placement-targeted campaigns. Reader Jeremy Brown set me off to track down an important problem — and a simple solution.
A few readers told me they’d tried running placement-targeted campaigns, and found many sites displaying AdWords content ads (i.e. AdSense publisher sites) don’t seem to be available to display placement-targeted ads.
Google told me that some AdSense publishers had chosen not to display ads from placement-targeted campaigns.

How It Came To This: Virals vs. Microsoft Microsoft recently published a letter from Kevin Johnson, President of Microsoft’s Platforms & Services Division, to his team. The letter details Microsoft’s interest in the Yahoo! merger, and the benefits the company and its employees will gain if the deal goes through. The letter seems to focus entirely on a friendly purchase, though Microsoft has already authorized a proxy fight for Yahoo! NYTimes.com DealBook looks at the letter as a “pep talk” to employees in preparation of a protracted and dirty fight, despite the letter’s gentle nature. I’m inclined to agree.
