Gathering of the SEM bloggers at Search Engine Strategies London When Search Engine Strategies London gets underway on Tuesday, Feb. 19, there will be more than a dozen chieftans of the SEM and SEO blogging community gathered at the Business Design Centre in Islington. (I’d compare what will take place next week to a “gathering of the clans,” except it involves a big bunch of SEM bloggers, not a large group of related people wearing kilts. Plus, it’s taking place in England, not in Scotland. (Read the full post about ‘Gathering of the SEM bloggers at Search Engine Strategies London’…)

Social Media Buzz Pocket Mining: The New Keyword Research The fundamental premise of search marketing remains revolutionary and timeless. We research what people care about and market (organic and paid) directly to SERPs for their queries. Classic keyword research reveals search frequency and phrase permutations to gauge marketplace interest. Lateral stemming thesaurus tools help us brainstorm frequently used alternate keyword clusters. For instance if your ‘re marketing "catering services," some customers are also searching for "wedding food" and "party planning." This is not earth shaking news to most. In an effort to divert some of the advertising revenue from the major Web portals, four of the nation’s largest newspaper companies have joined together to launch a coordinated advertising sales network.
The New York Times Company, Gannett, Hearst Corp. and the Tribune Company have invested in quadrantONE, an ad network that will pool together the inventory of each of the four companies’ various media holdings to offer a more attractive package for advertisers looking to reach a national audience.

Microsoft ‘Frees’ Office Formats
Autor admin | 16.02.2008 | Category SEO
Microsoft this week officially gave developers the right to freely use code and specifications for translating between its older proprietary Office file formats and Office 2007’s newer XML formats without fear of being sued.
At the same time, company officials must be sitting on pins and needles as a key meeting over whether or not its newer formats will become an international standard looms.
Microsoft officials announced today that they have placed the older Office binary file format specifications for Word, Excel and PowerPoint (.doc, .xls, .ppt) under the company’s Open Specification Promise (OSP). The OSP is a legal program whereby Microsoft promises not to sue developers who use specifications that it puts under the program’s aegis.

Is it Time to Reverse-Engineer The Brain?
Autor admin | 16.02.2008 | Category SEO
More affordable solar energy? Energy from fusion? Reverse-engineer the brain?
Those three are among the 14 “grand challenges” for the 21st century announced today by the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The top 14 list is the result of meetings started in 2006 by a diverse committee of experts from around the world. Commenting on the announcement, the U.S. National Science Foundation said the quality of our lives would improve if these challenges are met.
In addition to the committee of experts, the effort also received worldwide input from prominent engineers and scientists, as well as from the general public, over a one-year period via an interactive Web site.

Microsoft Invents a Reason to Buy a Tablet
Autor admin | 16.02.2008 | Category SEO
Why would anyone want to buy a Tablet PC?
Tablet devices are perceived as little more than heavy and slow laptops with small screens and large price tags. The payoff? You get to write on them with a stylus and take notes as if you’re writing on paper. Wake me when you’re done.
Poor sales prove that the costs exceed the benefits in the minds of most potential buyers.
InkSeine is interesting because of the audaciousness of its pen and paper centricity, and the invention of an entire new language of gestures and menu conventions.
All that may start to change tomorrow, when a prototype application called InkSeine — which is, essentially, a digital notebook on crack — is released for public trial. (Read the full post about ‘Microsoft Invents a Reason to Buy a Tablet’…)

Costs Drop, But Business’ Storage Strategies Still Fail
Autor admin | 16.02.2008 | Category SEO
It’s no secret that storage costs are dropping. But cheaper prices aren’t leading to smarter storage strategies — and companies are still overspending, according to one recent study.
A report from Compass Research found enterprises fail to capitalize on falling storage costs and often wind up paying more than necessary.
“Having the business assume that they can store all their data forever on high-cost, high-performance storage is not realistic or cost-effective,” report author Cindy LaChappelle told InternetNews.com.
Organizations need to start thinking about storage strategically …
