Mobile Industry Sees New Security Risks

Autor admin | 15.02.2008 | Category SEO

Security systems can now block the first computer viruses plaguing mobile phones, but the mobile industry sees new risks stemming from upcoming open software platforms such as Google’s Android.

Since 2004, viruses have been able to disable phones or swell phone bills through pricey messages or unwanted calls, leading to a new market for security technology.

“If Android becomes a fully open platform … and when such a platform becomes more common, risks are greater than with the current platform kings such as Symbian,” said Mikko Hypponen, head of research at security software firm F-Secure.

Security specialists also pointed to potential risks arising from Apple’s plans to open its software platform to third-party developers this month.

Wireless Ads Take Baby Steps to Reach Consumers

Consumers may be receptive to advertisements on their mobile phones in exchange for free calls or content, but operators remain cautious about intruding on the intimate space of a customer’s mobile phone.

For now, consumers do not have to fear that walking past a supermarket will trigger messages to their mobiles, advertising special offers inside, or have banners bursting onto the tiny screen while they check their e-mails on the go.

“Advertising is not just a straight move from the PC to the mobile phone,” Marco Boerries, head of Yahoo’s mobile business, said in a keynote speech at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Google PageRank: Simplified

Autor admin | 15.02.2008 | Category SEO

It may be the single most divisive element in the search optimization game. Mention it in a room full of SEOs (define) and you’ll likely be treated to a mixture of groans and hurrahs. Regardless of what color hat you’re wearing, everyone involved in search has a strong opinion about Google’s PageRank.

The backbone of its empire, PageRank is the metric that defines a Web page’s relevancy in the eyes of Google.

The Tool(bars) of the Trade

The controversy lies with the more public element of PageRank: Google Toolbar PageRank. The Toolbar PageRank number is what Google lets us see. For such a critical ranking, it’s a shame updates are so infrequent.

The Toolbar PageRank is often used by SEOs to gauge the worth of a link.

Universal Pictures: Optimizing Video for Search

Universal Pictures: Optimizing Video for Search
We hear a lot about universal search (define) and how it will keep SEO (define) professionals on their toes with constantly evolving ranking algorithms (define). So how can local online advertisers take advantage of universal search? Since universal search algos increasingly look favorably on video, the medium has been discovered by some clever SMBs as a side door into top SERP (define) rankings. For these local marketers, top spots for certain keywords that have a great deal of bid pressure (i.e. "restaurant San Francisco"), suddenly become more accessible with optimized video. Combine this with the relative dearth of optimized video out there, and it becomes a great opportunity for local video producers that are on top of their SEO game. Google to Test Video Ads on SERPs

Google to Test Video Ads on SERPs

Google has begun testing video ads on its search results pages, according to a report in the New York Times. Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of search products and user experience, told the Times that just as video ads are not effective on pages of text-based search results, text ads are not effective on search results with more multimedia elements, like Google’s universal search results.

“With universal search, something is getting shaken up a bit on the bottom part of the page,” Mayer said. “The ads on the top part of the page should match.”

Initially, video ads will not be apparent to searchers until they take action.
