Blue Chips Leave Techs Behind

Stocks soared in early trading Tuesday on the latest plans to save faltering credit markets, but the indexes pared their gains late in the day — and the Nasdaq gave back all its gains to end the day unchanged.

A plan to freeze home foreclosures and an offer from billionaire investor Warren Buffett to help bond insurers with municipal bond obligations boosted stocks in the early going, but fears that the latest moves aren’t enough to stem the seven-month-old credit market meltdown had stocks on the defensive the rest of the day.

Apple and Research In Motion led the tech pullback with losses of 3% each.

Microsoft Undeterred by Yahoo’s Rejection

Yesterday afternoon, Microsoft responded to Yahoo’s formal rejection of its acquisition bid in a brief statement, signaling its resolve to pursue the deal.

“It is unfortunate that Yahoo has not embraced our full and fair proposal to combine our companies,” Microsoft said in a statement. The company reiterated its belief that the merger would be in the best interest for shareholders of both companies.

“The Yahoo response does not change our belief in the strategic and financial merits of our proposal,” Microsoft added, while reporting that it “reserves the right to pursue all necessary steps” to complete the transaction.

Tool Provides a Grip on Loose Unix Data

Autor admin | 12.02.2008 | Category SEO

Unstructured data — those Word docs, video files, e-mails and text messages not tethered to a database — can cause a bucket load of worry for IT teams.

Unauthorized access to loose files can lead to data theft. Not knowing who’s accessing what data — as well as when and why — can put intellectual and proprietary information at serious risk.

In addition, storage budgets can be squandered if noncritical data is stored on expensive arrays.

Juniper Networks has those concerns, as well as the ability to see data access and ascertain data use patterns, in mind with latest version of Varonis DatAdvantage 3.5, now in beta-testing. The last update to the application occurred in April 2007.

RIM Blames Upgrade For ‘Critical’ BlackBerry Outage

Autor admin | 12.02.2008 | Category SEO

A major outage hit BlackBerry users in North America on Monday, cutting off wireless e-mail for everyone from busy executives to political campaign staff on the eve of three U.S. presidential primaries.

The disruption may have been caused by an upgrade to the systems of owner Research In Motion (RIM), its co-CEO Jim Balsillie said on Tuesday.

The popular e-mail service was down for about three hours across North America on Monday afternoon.

“At the core virtually all these things tend to happen on service upgrades,” Balsillie said in an interview with Reuters at the Mobile World Congress, but he added that the company was still working on getting to the root of the problem.

HP Beefs Up Blade Server Offerings

HP has added a new blade to its its portfolio that offers twice the capacity and potentially twice the performance over its older models, which could make it much more capable of handling business critical applications.

The HP Integrity BL870c is the same size as previous HP BladeSystem blades, but support twice as many CPUs, four Itanium processors instead of two, and twice the memory and storage capacity, up to 96GB of memory and 584GB of internal disk storage. At the same time, HP claims a 25 percent reduction in power because it doubles the performance in the same space as older blades.

Continuing to refresh its storage technologies, IBM today rolled out a sweeping array of enhancements to products for both enterprises and small and midsize businesses (SMB) — as well as dusting more “feature-shine” on an offering for telecom plays.

IBM’s latest product enhancements aim to provide customers with cheaper, faster and more efficient storage solutions, according to Charlie Andrews, IBM’s worldwide product manager of system storage.

Customers, whether large enterprises or small startups, seek less-expensive storage while also needing to meet expanding data requirements, Andrews told InternetNews.com.

“The move is toward driving more efficiency,” he said.

SEO Outsourcing: Don’t! Until You Read This

Autor admin | 12.02.2008 | Category SEO

I try to help educate people on what SEO (define) is and how to take the initial steps to begin a successful program.

One basic rule in life: it’s difficult to buy things you don’t understand. SEO can be difficult to understand, especially for marketing folks who’d rather put the search budget into SEM (define) PPC (define) campaigns (easy to understand, easy to buy).

I try to "dumb down" SEO in my column so we can create some evangelists out there.
