Google, Microsoft in Dueling Monopoly Claims
Autor admin | 04.02.2008 | Category SEO
You can’t drop a bomb like that without expecting some aftershocks. Google’s first public response to Microsoft’s blockbuster move revisits some familiar ground for both companies — and opens the first front in its war to keep Microsoft away from the Internet.
Writing in a company blog post on Sunday, Google Chief Legal Officer David Drummond warned that Microsoft’s acquisition bid for Yahoo raises troubling concerns about openness, innovation and competition in the Internet economy.
Microsoft announced the unsolicited $44.6 billion offer to buy Yahoo on Friday.

Does Social Media 2.0 deserve a second life? Okay, okay, so I’ve already weighed in on the question, “Is the Social Media Press Release a Meatball Sundae?” Last November, I provided four pieces of empirical evidence that demonstrated that social media press releases are the unfortunate result of mixing two good ideas. Now, I’ve been asked to take a look at today’s announcement by Marketwire of Social Media 2.0, or what the newswire calls, “the industry’s most authentic and comprehensive social media newswire product.” The Marketwire Tower in Second Life According to Marketwire, “Social Media 2.0 advances today’s press release format, offers public relations professionals a multitude of content options, and distributes news in a variety of mediums to distribution channels beyond traditional media distribution networks.” Now, you might think I’ve pre-judged Social Media 2.0. Novell Revamps openSUSE Community Pitch
Autor admin | 04.02.2008 | Category SEO
In the battle for the heart and minds of the Linux community, community outreach matters. Aggressive outreach has been part of the recipe for success behind Red Hat’s Fedora Linux. Ubuntu has also emerged as one of the leading Linux offerings based on the strength of its community.
Now Novell wants to catch up in hopes of capturing mindshare and respect for its openSUSE community Linux distribution.
One way Novell is seeking to boost openSUSE’s fortunes is by pulling in former journalist Joe “Zonker” Brockmeier to help spearhead community efforts and ultimately improve overall adoption.
“I’m going to try to spread adoption of Linux and openSUSE in particular,” Brockmeier, who is now Novell’s openSUSE community manager, told InternetNews.com.

BlackBerry Blackouts Balance Life and Work
Autor admin | 04.02.2008 | Category SEO
It may be wishful thinking, but a Canadian government ministry has sent out a directive to its employees urging them to relax and not to use their BlackBerry smartphones at night or on weekends and holidays.
Trying to re-establish a proper balance between work and life, Citizenship and Immigration Canada is starting by trying to cut the chains to what some have called CrackBerries.
The department’s deputy minister, Richard Fadden, sent out a memo asking employees to implement a BlackBerry blackout between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. and on weekends and holidays.
“Work/life quality is a priority for me and this organization because achieving it benefits us both as individuals and as a department,” Fadden wrote.

Chip Market Thrived in ‘07, Sees Strong Demand in ‘08
Autor admin | 04.02.2008 | Category SEO
Don’t talk recession to the chip industry. Both the semiconductor and graphics processing unit (GPU) sectors showed great growth in 2007 and are thus far expected to hold their own in 2008.
Average selling prices (ASPs), on the other hand, are a different story.
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported that despite a 100 percent increase in the memory bits sold this year — that is, the overall amount of gigabits sold — the overall annual revenue for memory still fell because ASPs dropped so much.
The reason is that capacity managed to somehow exceed demand, according to John Greenagel, a spokesman for the SIA. “In some of these countries, the expansion is subsidized by government.

Microsoft-Yahoo: Will it Work?
Autor admin | 04.02.2008 | Category SEO
It may be the right move on paper, but making it work isn’t going to be easy.
That was the general consensus among several analysts following Friday’s blockbuster announcement of Microsoft’s $44.6 billion takeover bid for Yahoo.
“If Microsoft and Yahoo join forces it will be the most important event in the Internet industry this year, without a doubt,” said Ken Cassar, vice president for industry solutions analytics at Nielsen Online.
According to Cassar, the combined entity would be visited by 86 percent of U.S.

Microsoft Fires Back at Google: Who’s Playing Monopoly?

Microsoft Fires Back at Google: Who’s Playing Monopoly? Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith fired back at Google in a published press release late today, in essence promising to Do No Evil after acquiring Yahoo. Microsoft stated, “Google is the dominant search engine and advertising company on the Web.” John Battelle, in response to the Esq. vs Esq. war of words (started by Google dropping an antitrust bomb) dropped his own f-bomb, sounding almost Shakespearean in a “first kill all the lawyers” kind of way: “Someone tell the chief counsels to shut the f. up.” Microsoft said in effect - Google, monopolize this: “Google has amassed about 75 percent of paid search revenues worldwide.” Google’s share of searches - the key success metric for search engines - continues to grow.
