SEMPO Running Agency Salary Survey
Having successfully completed an in-house search marketers’ salary survey in the fall (with results in January), SEMPO, the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization, is conducting an online salary survey of agency-based search marketers.
The survey presents less than 30 questions and can be completed in an estimated 12 minutes. It’s open now and will run through mid March. Results of the survey will be published in connection with ad:tech San Francisco in April.

Wikileaks Ruling Nears, May Impact Net Free Speech

A federal judge is scheduled to hear arguments today on whether to uphold the block on Wikileaks, a site created for anonymous whistleblowers to post documents detailing corporate improprieties or government misconduct.
Earlier this month, Judge Jeffrey White of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco ordered the domain name Wikileaks.org locked and disabled during a pending lawsuit. (The site can still be accessed in the United States at Wikileaks.cx.)

Bain, Huawei to Resubmit $2.2B Bid For 3Com: Report

Within the next several weeks, Bain Capital and China’s Huawei plan to reapply for U.S. approval for a planned buyout of 3Com, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
The $2.2 billion transaction would still leave Huawei with 16.5 percent of the company and Bain holding the rest, said the Journal citing people familiar with the matter.

More Americans Turning to Web For News

Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe traditional journalism is out of touch, and nearly half are turning to the Internet to get their news, according to a new survey.
While most people think journalism is important to the quality of life, 64 percent are dissatisfied with the quality of journalism in their communities, a We Media/Zogby Interactive online poll showed.

Microsoft Cuts Vista Prices to Urge Upgrades

On Thursday Microsoft said it plans to cut prices of its Vista operating system sold at retail outlets in a move to push customers to switch to the newest version of Windows.
The world’s largest software maker said it plans to lower retail prices for Vista in 70 countries later this year in tandem with the shipment of the first major update to Vista, known as Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Microsoft Previews ‘Live’ Dev Tools

Microsoft this week is giving a sneak peek at new Live services and platform development tools it plans to introduce at the company’s MIX08 Web developers conference next week.
“We’ve got some cool new applications and APIs we’re unveiling at MIX08,” David Treadwell, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Live Platform Services group, said in a blog post Wednesday evening.
MIX is Microsoft’s annual confab for Web developers and designers. This year’s event, which runs next Wednesday through Friday, is being held in the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas as usual.
Among technologies the company plans to show off at MIX08 will be an early version of Internet Explorer 8, which will soon begin a “private” beta test.

Novell Grows Its Linux Business

So far so good for Novell.
For its first quarter 2008 results Novell reported growing income and revenues with a strong year over year showing from its Linux platform business. With Microsoft’s Windows Server 2008 set to enter the market, Novell’s CEO is optimistic that Novell will continue to grow its business even further.
Novell reported first quarter 2008 net revenue of $231 million which was up from $218 million in the first fiscal quarter of 2007.
